“…Indeed, Figure 1 (top) shows a well-separated doublet of quartets at -22.2 ppm with 3=/P_F = 79 Hz and VF_F = 8.1 Hz which we assign to the CF3 ligand trans to trimethylphosphine in 11c. Although there are no other bis (trifluoromethyl) compounds with inequivalent CF3 groups available for comparison, 4JF_F = 4.9 Hz in Hg(CF3)2 (measured from 13C satellites).22 Two (trifluoromethyl)selenium compounds, (CF3)SeCF2Cl and (CF3)SeCFCl2, have 4Jf.f values of 7.5 and 7.0 Hz,respectively.23,24 Finally, Figure 1 (bottom) shows a complex pattern which may be fit to an (exactly) overlapping doublet of quartets (denoted in the figure as quartets "a" and "b"), with VP_F = 16 Hz and VF_F = 8.1 Hz, at a chemical shift of -26.3 ppm. We assign this spectral feature to the trifluoromethyl group cis to PMe3 in 11c based on the small phosphorus-fluorine coupling.…”
