Chemical Study and Biological Activity Evaluation of Two Azorean Macroalgae: Ulva rigida and Gelidium microdon

Abstract: The green macroalga Ulva rigida C. Agardh (Chlorophyta) and the red macroalga Gelidium microdon Kützing (Rhodophyta), collected from the Azorean archipelago, were investigated for their secondary metabolites and their in vitro growth inhibitory effect on three human tumor cell lines: MCF-7 (breast adenocarcinoma), NCI-H460 (non-small cell lung cancer) and A375-C5 (melanoma), as well as for their antifungal and antibacterial activities. The methanol extract of U. rigida furnished isofucosterol (1), 7(E)-3β-hydr… Show more

“…Silva et al showed that Ulva rigida and the red macroalga Gelidium microdon Kützing (Gelidiales), collected from the Azorean archipelago, exhibited in vitro growth inhibitory effect on human tumor cell lines: NCI-H460 (non-small cell lung cancer) [ 67 ]. The crude methanol extracts (after removal of chlorophylls) of both macroalgae were found moderately active against cell lines (IC 50 = 42 µg/mL for U. rigida and IC 50 = 65 µg/mL for G. microdon ).…”

“…Macroalgae are also considered a promising source of value-added phytochemicals. Several studies have reported that glycolipids can also display bioactive activities, including antioxidant [54], anti-inflammatory [14], anti-proliferative [55], and anti-microbial [56] activities. Some of the glycolipids identified in P. palmata have already been described as having bioactive properties, such as SQDG(34:2) with antiviral activity against HCM-virus [16], SQMD(16:0) with antibacterial activity against Xanthomonas oryzae [57], and the SQDG carrier of EPA with anti-proliferative effect on the inhibition of human telomerase [12] and DNA polymerase α and β [58].…”

“…The structures of lumichrome ( 3 ) [17,18,19], ergosterol ( 4 ) [20], and ergosterol 5,8-endoperoxide ( 5 ) [21] (Figure 1) were elucidated by analysis of their 1D and 2D NMR spectra as well as HRMS data, and also by comparison of their spectral data (Figures S23–S33, Table S1) with those reported in the literature.…”
