Chemical profiling and anti-psoriatic activity of methanolic extract of Andrographis nallamalayana J.L.Ellis

Abstract: Andrographis nallamalayana is being widely used as tribal medicine in the treatment of leucoderma and mouth ulcers. Chemical profiling of methanolic extract of the whole plant (PE), using GC-MS and LC-MS, revealed the presence of compounds viz. α-tocopherol, β-sitosterol, tetradecanoic acid, monostearin, flavones/flavanones and their glycosides, chromones, etc. Topical application of imiquimod on the dorsal portion of male BALB/C mice resulted in the development of psoriatic symptoms (erythema, scaling, thicke… Show more

“…An animal study showing the topical application of methanolic extract of Andrographis nallamalayana on psoriatic lesions showed alleviation of symptoms within 12 days. The extract contains α-tocopherol among other natural chemicals [54]. A case report detailed the efficacy of nutritional supplementation and diet manipulation without concomitant standard psoriasis treatment in a 36-year old female with psoriasis.…”

“…β-Sitosterol (α-dihydrofucosterol) (31) is the most abundant phytosterol on human diet and possess significant effect in relieving menopausal symptoms and reducing blood cholesterol levels by blocking the intestinal uptake. [86][87][88] Encountered in leaves, flowers and fruits, largely distributed throughout the Plantae kingdom, [89][90][91] this metabolite has a similar structure to estradiol and cholesterol, showing important anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, [92][93][94] as well as antitumoral effects, such as minimizing symptoms of prostatic hyperplasia. 95 In recent study, it also has a significant concentrationdependent inhibition against induced-Epstein-Barr virus antigen, at low toxicity rates.…”

“…The genomic and metabolite studies when combined with various bioinformatic analysis brings out the unknown diterpenoid scaffolds and the enzyme information (Andersen-Ranberg et al, 2016). In our laboratory, we have a comprehensive research programme on A.paniculata distribution, enhanced production of bioactive compound andrographolide and study of key enzymes/proteins (Neeraja et al, 2015;Parlapally et al, 2015;Zaheer and Giri, 2015;Zaheer et al, 2017a;Zaheer et al, 2017b;;Bindu et al, 2017;Srinath et al, 2017). In the present communication, in silico studies such as structural, functional features and the evolutionary relationship were elucidated using various bioinformatics tools.…”
