Summary: Oxazoline functionalities were introduced onto the surface of polyacrylonitrile particles and polyacrylonitrile‐grafted films by the catalyzed reaction of a substituted aminoalcohol with the nitrile groups. The resulting oxazoline group was reacted with methyl triflate to use the resulting oxazolinium salt as initiator for the ring opening grafting of 2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline. The products were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The modification of polyacrylonitrile with the substituted aminoalcohol achieves high conversions. Conversely, the amount of grafted 2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline is low. The results show that controlled levels of 2‐oxazolines or polyoxazolines can be incorporated onto the surface of polyacrylonitrile.

Poly(N-vinylformamide) (PNVF) was synthesized and hydrolyzed to poly(vinylamine) (PVAm) in both HCl and NaOH solutions. The hydrolysis kinetics and the equilibrium hydrolysis were examined experimentally at different temperatures, polymer concentrations, and acid-or base-to-amide molar ratios. The hydrolysis kinetics strongly depended on temperature, polymer, and HCl or NaOH concentrations, but showed little dependence on PNVF molecular weight. The acid hydrolysis of PNVF exhibited limited conversions because of the electrostatic repulsion among the cationic amine groups generated during hydrolysis and proton hydrates. In the basic hydrolysis, complete amide conversions were observed when the NaOH/amide molar ratios were greater than unity. The effects of temperature and PNVF concentration on the equilibrium amide conversion appeared to be negligible in both acidic and basic hydrolysis. The equilibrium conversions of base hydrolysis were higher than those of acidic hydrolysis under the same reaction conditions. At NaOH/amide ratios of less than unity, the equilibrium hydrolysis experiments revealed that one base molecule could induce the hydrolysis of more than one amide group.

ABSTRACT:The adsorption of Fe 2ϩ and Fe 3ϩ ions on 2-vinylpyridine-divinylbenzene copolymer and acrylonitrile-methyl methacrylate-divinylbenzene terpolymer was investigated. In general, the adsorption of Fe 2ϩ and Fe 3ϩ in both resins increased with the enhancement of hydrochloric acid and metal concentration. The metal adsorption on the terpolymer increased sharply with the addition of small portions of ethanol, whereas the adsorption on the copolymer practically was not affected by the presence of the alcohol. An increase in temperature produced a small increase in iron adsorption for both resins. Fourier transform infrared spectra showed that nitrile and ester groups of the terpolymer did not suffer hydrolysis during metal adsorption, even for the highest HCl concentration and the highest temperature applied. A mechanism of iron adsorption through the ion exchange of chloride anions by tetrahedral [FeCl 4 ] 2Ϫ or [FeCl 4 ] Ϫ anions is proposed.
