“…The estimated molecular weight of American ginseng immunostimulatory polysaccharide PPQA2 and PPQA4 reported in our study was within this range. Du et al [38] recently found that acetyl-polysaccharide (content higher acetyl groups) showed markedly increasing immunostimulation potency, while deac-polysaccharide (without acetyl groups) had weak effect compared with the primary one. Although the molecular weight of polysaccharide PPQA5 (5.3 × 10 3 Da) was less than 10,000 Da, the existence of acetyl groups might contribute to its inmmunostimulating activity.…”

“…The main mechanism is that the acetyl groups could make polysaccharide branches stretch and change orientation, causing the generation of polysaccharide molecules with transverse order. The alteration of spatial arrangement of polysaccharide chains can result in the exposure of polysaccharide hydroxyl groups, and thus increase solubility in water (Duand others ). This method has already been successfully applied to cellulose modification (Barud and others ).…”

“…Acetylated polysaccharides are able to donate more electrons and quickly terminate the radical chain reactions. The acetylated derivatives of pumpkin polysaccharide can exhibit higher protective effects than natural polysaccharide, in terms of inhibiting cell death induced by H 2 O 2 and cell apoptosis of rats’ thymic lymphocytes (Duand others ).…”

“…It was conducted that the new absorption peak in the finer powders did not appear. Absorption peak at 1,726 cm −1 was attributed to the carbonyl (C=O) groups stretching vibration of polysaccharide structure from TAPs, which indicated that TAPs might be an acidic polysaccharide and/or contain O-acetyl groups (Du et al, 2014). In general, the bands at around 3,339 and 2,924 cm −1 were corresponding to -OH and C-H stretch vibration in polysaccharide structure of TAPs, respectively (Du et al, 2014).…”

“…The peaks at about 3,339, 2,921, 1,726, 1,642, 1,411, 1,237, 1,042, 797 and 593 cm −1 by FTIR spectra were clearly observed in Figure 3. In general, the bands at around 3,339 and 2,924 cm −1 were corresponding to -OH and C-H stretch vibration in polysaccharide structure of TAPs, respectively (Du et al, 2014). Table 5 presents the peak positions and assignments of the TAPs in detail.…”
