RESUMO:Achyrocline satureioides (marcela) é utilizada na medicina popular brasileira, na forma de chá, como tratamento de patologias digestivas e infl amatórias. O efeito anti-proliferativo de infusões de marcela sobre o ciclo celular da cebola foi avaliado, utilizando-se infl orescências de marcela recém coletadas (2005) e após armazenamento por 30 meses (2003). Preparou-se as infusões em duas concentrações: 5,0 mg/mL (concentração usual como chá) e 20 mg/mL. Utilizaram-se 3 grupos de 6 bulbos de cebola para cada população de marcela. Retirou-se um grupo de bulbos controle de cada população. Todos os bulbos enraizados em água destilada foram transferidos para os extratos de marcela e permaneceram por 24 horas, (os bulbos controle permaneceram em água). As radículas foram coletadas, fi xadas em etanol-ácido acético (3:1) por 24 h e estocadas em álcool 70%. Foram analisadas 6000 células por grupo de bulbos, e os índices mitóticos calculados submetidos a análise estatística pelo teste 2 a 5%. Conclui-se que as infusões de marcela possuem ação antiproliferativa sobre o ciclo celular da cebola e que essa ação inibitória da divisão celular aumenta conforme aumento da concentração, bem como após o armazenamento.Unitermos: Achyrocline satureioides, Allium cepa, Asteraceae, Liliaceae, atividade antiproliferativa, índice mitótico, planta medicinal.ABSTRACT: "Anti-proliferative effect of infusions of Achyrocline satureioides on the Allium cepa cell cycle". Achyrocline saturoides (marcela) is used in Brazilian folk medicine as a tea in the treatment of digestive and infl ammatory diseases. The anti-proliferative effect of infusions of marcela on onion cell cycle was evaluated by using the infl orescences of recently collected marcela and after the storage for 30 months. Marcela infl orescences were collected for the infusion preparations in 2003 and in 2005 (used still fresh). We prepared the infusions at two concentrations 5.0 mg/mL (concentration used as tea) and 20 mg/mL. We used two groups of six onion bulbs for each population of marcela, and one group of bulbs of each population was withdrawn as a control group. All bulbs rooted in distilled water and after they were transferred to the extracts of marcela and they were kept there for 24 hours (control bulbs remained under water). The root tips were collected, after fi xed in ethanol acetic acid (3:1) for 24 hours and, stored under alcohol 70%. A total of 6000 cells per group of bulbs was analyzed, and the mitotic indexes were calculated and undergone to statistical analysis by using 2 at 5%. The conclusions were that the infusions of marcela have anti-proliferative action on the cell cycle of onion and that this inhibitory action on the cell division increases according to the increase of the infusion concentration, after storage as well.

The genus Strychnos (Loganiaceae) is well-known as a rich source of various bioactive metabolites. In continuation of our phytochemical studies on plants from Amazonia, we examined Strychnosaff. darienensis, collected in Peru. This species has been traditionally used in South America and is still presently used as a drug by the Yanesha tribe in Peru. Phytochemical investigation of this plant led to the isolation and structure elucidation by ΝuclearΜagnetic Resonance and High Resolution Mass Spectroscopy of 14 compounds that belong to the categories of phenolic acids [p-hydroxybenzoic acid (1) and vanillic acid (2)], flavonoids [luteolin, (3),3-O-methyl quercetin (4), strychnobiflavone (5), minaxin (6) and 3’,4’,7-trihydroxy-flavone (7)], lignans [syringaresinol-β-D-glucoside (8), balanophonin (9) and ficusal (10)] and alkaloids [venoterpine (11), 11-methoxyhenningsamine (12), diaboline (13) and 11-methoxy diaboline (14)]. The isolated flavonoids—a class known for its anti-aging activities—were further evaluated for their biological activities on normal human skin fibroblasts. Among them, only (6), and to a lesser extent (7), exhibited cytotoxicity at 100 µg/ml. All five flavonoids suppressed intracellularreactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, either basal or following stimulation with hydrogen peroxide or both. Moreover, luteolin and strychnobiflavone protected skin fibroblasts against ultraviolet (UV)-irradiation-induced cell death. The isolated flavonoids could prove useful bioactive ingredients in the cosmetic industry.

In an effort to study plants of the Rubiaceae from Panama, 299 herbarium samples, representing 133 species, were subjected to alkaloid screening. From this total, 234 samples (78%) afforded a positive test for alkaloids, and 99 samples (33%) gave a positive reaction for indole alkaloids; 109 species (82%) contain alkaloids and 58 (44%) produce indole alkaloids. This is the first time that 102 (94%) and 52 (90%) species are reported as alkaloid and indole alkaloid bearing, respectively. The results of 10 out of 15 species, that is 67%, corroborate earlier studies. The richest indole alkaloid species were: Materials and Methods Plant materialLeaf, flower, fruit or seed samples were provided by Mireya Correa, Director of the Herbarium of the University of Panama (PMA). Screening of alkaloidsLess than 1 g of samples was moistened with diluted 10% ammonia, shaken with chloroform for 24, and brought to acid-base extraction to yield the alkaloid extracts. The extracts were redissolved in 1 ml of chloroform, and 15 drops of the extract were spotted on a filter paper. For comparison, 5, 10 and 15 drops of 0.5 mg/ml emetine hydrochloride were spotted on the same filter paper. Then, the paper was sprayed with Dragendorff 's reagent. A positive test for alkaloids was recorded when an orange colour ranging from light (+) to very deep (++++) developed. A score of four crosses (++++) means that the color reaction of the sample is more intense
