The optimization of extraction by the Box–Behnken design of response surface methodology, chemical composition, antioxidant activity (AA), and total phenolic content (TPC) of fresh and cured betel leaf essential oil (BLEO) was reported. A quadratic polynomial equation developed by multiple regression analysis revealed that the models were highly significant with R2 = .98 and p < .0001. At optimal extraction conditions of extraction time (140 min), extraction temperature (100°C) and leaf to water ratio (1:1.5 g/L), 0.35% and 0.48% of fresh and cured BLEO yield were obtained. Thirty‐three and thirty volatile compounds were identified from fresh and cured BLEO by gas chromatography‐mass spectroscopy, accounting for 96.4% and 93.96% of the total oils, respectively. Eugenol, estragole, linalool, α‐copene, and anethole with different percentages were accounted to be major components. Fresh BLEO exhibited strong antioxidant effects on DPPH and TPC than cured leaf EO. Both the EOs explored that AA had a positive correlation with their phenolic contents. Practical applicationsThe present study explores the effect of optimized exhaustive hydrodistillate condition on the analysis of chemical composition and AA of essential oil (EO). The findings of optimized extraction embodied in the present research can be scaled up for commercial and industrial purposes. Both fresh and cured BLEO may be used in the food industry as a natural food preservative and flavoring agent. It can be also used for various herbal, medicinal, and therapeutic products. The main identified compounds such as eugenol, estragole, and linalool are the most valuable for food and pharmaceutical industries. Eugenol was found to be the highest amount in the extracted EO that can be used as a local anesthetic in dentistry as an ingredient in dental cement for temporary fillings.

Essential oils (EOs) from medicinal and aromatic plants are interesting products to be used as natural food preservatives. The EOs from the genus Satureja are reported to inhibit foodborne pathogens being worthy of use as food preservatives. Satureja macrantha is found in Western and Northwest Iran and commonly used as a food flavoring agent and for the treatment of urinary diseases. The objective of the present study was to identify the chemical composition of S. macrantha EOs at different growth stages (vegetative, flowering and fruiting stages) and to evaluate their biological activities. Chemical compositions were analyzed using GC-FID and GC-MS. The antibacterial activity was evaluated using the broth microdilution method against the foodborne pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC23922), Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC29212) (Gram-positive), Enterobacter aerogenes (ATCC13046) and Escherichia coli. The antioxidant activity was estimated using the DPPH, ABTS and reducing power assays. The yields of S. macrantha EOs were in the range of 1.4–1.8%, thus scalable for the manufacture of food preservatives on an industrial level. The main compounds of EOs were carvacrol (42.7–48.2%), thymol (0.2–16.5%), p-cymene (10.1–14.7%) and γ-terpinene (7.9–9.1%) in all phenological stages examined. The strongest antibacterial activity (MICs = 5–20 µg/mL) of the EOs was recorded in samples obtained during the flowering stage where carvacrol (42.7%) and thymol (16.5) were present both at high percentages. On the other hand, the antioxidant activity was found to be slightly higher in the other stages. As the EO obtained at flowering showed the best inhibitory properties against foodborne pathogenic bacteria, it is suggested that plants at this stage can be selected as main sources of food preservative agents.

BACKGROUND To enhance discovering efficiency of new herbicidal compounds, a strategy for rapidly screening out strongly herbicidal chemical components from natural resources is necessary. RESULTS Seventeen essential oils selected from 14 Eucalyptus species and hybrids were evaluated for their herbicidal activities on annual ryegrass. A feasible strategy was established for rapidly pinpointing the chemicals contributing to strong herbicidal activities without the process of isolation and purification of individual compounds. This strategy was based on gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) coupled with principal component analysis (PCA) and verified by the bioassay results using several individual compounds. Two strong herbicidal compounds trans‐pinocarveol and α‐terpineol were screened out using the strategy. The strong herbicidal activity of trans‐pinocarveol was discovered for the first time. CONCLUSION The established strategy of screening herbicidal compounds from natural resources is simple, feasible and reliable. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry
