Chemical control of Western Flower Thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande)

Abstract: SummaryFifty‐one pesticides currently registered for use in the UK were tested in the laboratory against Western Flower Thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) maintained on chrysanthemum leaf discs. In an initial screening trial of the pesticides against larval thrips, 14 caused more than 75% mortality three days after exposure. These were tested further against adults and pupae and retested against larvae. A series of glasshouse trials were conducted using the most efficacious pesticides evaluated earlier. Granu… Show more

“…This is especially true for pests that have developed resistance to most of the currently used pesticides. F. occidentalis is a serious greenhouse pest with a world-wide distribution and a high degree of pesticide resistance (Br0dsgaard, 1989a;Helyer & Brobyn, 1992). It is therefore important to develop optimal monitoring tools for this pest.…”

“…Each test was replicated two to four times depending on the numbers of thrips available. Numbers tested always exceeded the 120 minimum individuals proposed by Robertson el Helyer and Brobyn (1992) used a similar method, but their process required separate treatments of leaf-discs and thrips. The thrips were immersed in insecticide emulsions, and the discs sprayed with a Potter spray tower before being set in agar.…”

“…Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), is a serious economic pest of horticultural crops in many countries (Nasruddin and Smitley 1991;Helyer and Brobyn 1992;Immaraju et al 1992) and has proved difficult to control because of its ability to develop insecticide resistance (Schreiber et al 1990;Immaraju et al 1992). F. occidentalis was first discovered in Australia (Western Australia) in April 1993 (Malipatil et al 1993), and was subsequently detected in New South Wales in September 1993 (P. Gillespie, pers.…”

“…One of the factors that accelerates the infestations and makes thrips difficult to control is their dispersion and spatial distribution potential (Helyer & Brobyn, 1992). Understanding their spatial distribution may be one of the ways to improve chemical and biological controls, directing them toward areas of higher density and detecting the source of initial infestation (Carrillo et al, 2014).…”
