Chemical constituents and biological activities against Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) of the essential oil from Citrus wilsonii leaves

Abstract: The essential oil obtained from Citrus wilsonii Tanaka leaves by hydrodistillation was investigated by GC and GC-MS. The main components of the essential oil were identified to be citronellol (16.94 %), neryl acetate (10.35 %), γ-terpinene (9.85 %), citronellal (9.36 %) and β-pinene (6.72 %). These four compounds, predicted with a bioactivity-test to be the active constituents, were isolated and identified. It was found that the essential oil of C. wilsonii leaves and the isolated compounds possessed fumigant … Show more

“…Estragole was also found to have contact and repellent activities against T. castaneum , L. bostrychophila [38], Lasioderma serricorne , S. oryzae , Callosobruchus chinensis [41] and S. zeamais [42,43]. Additionally, γ-terpinene was found to exhibit activity against T. castaneum [44] and show high toxicity against Anopheles sinensis , A. aegypti , Aedes albopictus and Culex pipiens pallens mosquito larvae [45]. Moreover, germacrene D is known to have a strong effect on insect behavior [46], and α-terpineol exhibited fumigant, contact and repellent bioactivities against L. serricorne [47].…”

“…The leaf oil composition of C. wilsonii was characterized by the association of γterpinene (19.5%), geranial (15.6%), neral (11.6%), and β-pinene (9.7%). Previously reported chemical compositions were drastically different: (i) γ-terpinene (12.9%), thymol (9.8%), β-pinene (8%), (E)-β-ocimene (6.9%), and p-cymene (4.5%) [19]; (ii) linalool (38.2%), γterpinene (25.4%), p-cymene (14.6%), neryl acetate (12.5%), β-pinene (9.8%), and nerol (5.8%) [19]; and iii) citronellol (16.9%), followed by neryl acetate (10.4%), γ-terpinene (9.9%), citronellal (9.4%), and β-pinene (6.7%) [44]. Lota et al [37] described a similar chemical profile with quantitative variations: γ-terpinene (36.1%), geranial (3.4%), neral (2.3%), and β-pinene (14%).…”

“…Besides insecticidal and repellent activity, essential oils from different plant sources have also exhibited several biological activities, including antimicrobial 18 and antifungal 19 , nematicidal 20 , larvicidal 21 and acaricidal 22 . Actually, this vast arsenal of bioactive compounds has attracted attention of researchers in recent years.…”
