Needles of seven cultivated clones (C1 – C7) of Juniperus communis at lower altitude and three wild Juniperus species (J. communis, J. recurva and J. indica) at higher altitudes were investigated comparatively for their essential oils (EOs) yields, chemical composition, cytotoxic and antibacterial activities. The EOs yields varied from 0.26 to 0.56% (v/w) among samples. Sixty‐one volatile components were identified by gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and quantified using gas chromatography GC (FID) representing 82.5 – 95.7% of the total oil. Monoterpene hydrocarbons (49.1 – 82.8%) dominated in all samples (α‐pinene, limonene and sabinene as major components). Principal component analysis (PCA) of GC data revealed that wild and cultivated Juniperus species are highly distinct due to variation in chemical composition. J. communis (wild species) displayed cytotoxicity against SiHa (human cervical cancer), A549 (human lung carcinoma) and A431 (human skin carcinoma) cells (66.4 ± 2.2%, 74.4 ± 1.4% and 57.4 ± 4.0%), respectively, at 200 μg/ml. EOs exhibited better antibacterial activity against Gram‐positive bacteria than against Gram‐negative bacteria with the highest zone of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus MTCC 96 (19.2 ± 0.7) by clone‐7. As per the conclusion of the findings, EOs of clone‐2, clone‐5 and clone‐7 can be suggested to the growers of lower altitude, as there is more possibility of uses of these EOs in food and medicinal preparations.

Se desarrollaron modelos matemáticos del crecimiento y germinación in vitro de Alternaria alternata en presencia de aceites esenciales. Mediante el análisis de componentes principales, se encontraron similitudes entre ellos considerando su composición volátil. El crecimiento micelial y germinación de conidios de A. alternata se evaluó en PDA con aceites de canela, epazote y limón (0.25, 0.5, 1.0 µL mL-1). Los aceites se obtuvieron por hidrodestilación y comercialmente. Se caracterizaron por cromatografía de gases acoplada a espectrometría de masas. Para ajustar los datos experimentales y predecir su comportamiento se emplearon las ecuaciones de Baranyi y Roberts y logística. Por su composición química los aceites se agruparon en: 1) canela (comercial y no-comercial), en el que predominó el cis-Cinamaldehído, 2) limón comercial (D-Limoneno), y epazote (comercial y no-comercial), con Ascaridol y ρ-Cimeno y 3) limón no-comercial. El aceite de canela (0.5 y 1.0 µL∙ mL-1) inhibió el crecimiento micelial de A. alternata, mientras que, la germinación se inhibió 100 % con la presencia de aceites de limón y epazote (0.25 y 0.5 µL∙ mL-1). Los modelos matemáticos y el análisis de componente principales, son herramientas eficaces para entender el efecto de los aceites esenciales en A. alternata.

Essential oils (EOs) from Eucalyptus globulus Labill. ssp. globulus and from Mediterranean autochthonous aromatic plants - Thymus mastichina L., Mentha pulegium L., Rosmarinus officinalis L., Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi ssp. nepeta, Cistus ladanifer L., Foeniculum vulgare L., Dittrichia viscosa (L.) Greuter ssp. viscosa - were extracted by hydrodistillation and characterized by GC-FID and NMR spectroscopy. EOs were evaluated for antimicrobial properties against several bacterial strains, using diverse methods, namely, the agar disc-diffusion method, the microdilution method, the crystal violet assay and the Live/Dead staining for assessment of biofilm formation. Potential synergy was assessed by a checkerboard method. EOs of R. officinalis and C. ladanifer showed a predominance in monoterpene hydrocarbons (> 60%); EOs of C. nepeta, M. pulegium, T. mastichina, E. globulus and F. vulgare were rich in oxygenated monoterpenes (62 - 96%) whereas EO of D. viscosa was mainly composed of oxygenated sesquiterpenes (54%). All EOs showed antimicrobial activity; M. pulegium and E. globulus generally had the strongest antimicrobial activity. EO of C. nepeta was the most promising in hampering the biofilm formation. The combinations D. viscosa/C. nepeta and E. globulus/T. mastichina were synergistic against Staphylococcus aureus. These results support the notion that EOs from the aromatic plants herein reported should be further explored as potential pharmaceuticals and/or food preservatives.
