Chemical Compositions, Somatic Embryogenesis, and Somaclonal Variation in Cumin

Abstract: This is the first report evaluating the relationship between the chemical compositions of cumin seeds (based on the analysis of the content of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, proline, protein, terpenic compounds, alcohol/phenols, aldehydes, and epoxides) and the induction efficiency of somatic embryogenesis in two Iranian superior cumin landraces (Golestan and North Khorasan). Cotyledons isolated from Golestan landrace seeds cultivated on MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg/L kinetin proved to be the best prima… Show more

“…All polymorphic bands among parent donor and its somaclones were occurred in parental bands which were absence in some somaclones and/or new non-parental bands which were generated only in some somaclones. This result is in line with determination of genetic polymorphism of somaclones in cumin, biochemical markers (Gupta, 2013), RAPD (Bahmankar et al, 2019;Bahraminejad et al, 2012;Soniya et al, 2001), SRAP (Bhatt et al, 2017).…”

“…It can modulate redox signaling and, its overexpression in tomato could increase ROS and NO scavenging efficiency (60). Competence for SE induction was shown to be positively linked to the amount of anti-oxidant secondary plant compounds and enzymes (18,26,(61)(62)(63)(64)(65). It is relevant to mention that high levels of NO can counteract SE induction, highly lightening the importance of balanced ROS/ RNS homeodynamics in cells.…”

“…Proline had no visible impact on the shoot proliferation of nodal explant of R. canina. This amino acid was previously reported to be effective in somatic embryogenesis in certain plant species [44,45]. Although proline at the maximum concentration (2 g/l) improved shoot length and leaf number, it failed to stimulate shoot regeneration in the nodal explant of R. canina and thus it is not suggested to be used for direct in vitro regeneration of this plant.…”
