Chemical composition, toxicity, and repellence of plant essential oils against Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Liviidae)

Abstract: Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) is an invasive species in America and is the main vector of the pathogen associated with Huanglongbing, a deadly disease of citrus plants in the world. The management of such a problem includes the intensive use of insecticides to reduce vector populations and risk of pathogen transmission. As an alternative to synthetic insecticides to control D. citri, the present study determined the chemical composition of diverse plant essential oils and assessed the toxicit… Show more

“…In view of this, studies on the phytosanitary use of essential oils from different aromatic plants have increased in recent decades (Regnault-Roger et al, 2012;Alves et al, 2018;Mendoza-García et al, 2019), motivated by the low number of commercial products that have been produced, mainly with extracts and oil of Indian neem Azadirachta indica A. Juss. (Meliaceae).…”

“…In searching for more eco‐friendly surrogates for synthetic chemicals, phytochemicals and other bio‐derived compounds have been intensively studied (Campolo et al, 2018; Geetha & Roy, 2014; Huang et al, 2019; Kimutai et al, 2017; Lee, 2018; McAllister & Adams, 2010; Mendoza‐García et al, 2014, 2019; Panella et al, 2005; Pinheiro et al, 2013; Regnault‐Roger et al, 2012; Tawatsin et al, 2006; Wang et al, 2012, 2014; Wiltz et al, 2007). However, these compounds are usually volatile or quickly degraded and require specialized formulations to extend their release duration (Golden et al, 2018).…”

“…Additionally, the shoots of many species are covered with secretory glandular trichomes. The leaves of Lemmon's marigold contain numerous phytochemicals with insecticidal and repellent activity against a broad range of insects, such as 4‐ethyl‐4‐methyl‐1‐hexene, β‐ocimene, dihydrotagetone, (E)‐tagetone and (E)‐tagetenone (Mendoza‐García et al, 2014, 2019; Tucker & Maciarello, 1996). The marigolds' roots also release bioactive compounds against rhizosphere nematodes.…”

“…In the forestry part, the availability of nutrients in the production of commercial forest species is addressed (Montero et al, 2019;Rodríguez et al, 2014;Santiago et al, 2016). The contributions on the production of crops are more prolific and include basic crops, fruits, grass AGRO PRODUCTIVIDAD and forage, citrus fruits and energy crops (Aguas et al, 2014;Alamilla et al, 2016;Andrés et al, 2017;Calzada et al, 2014;Espinosa et al, 2018;García et al, 2016;García et al, 2019;Grifaldo et al, 2019;Guillén et al, 2018;Gutiérrez et al, 2018;Hernández et al, 2016;Hernández et al, 2019;Ibarra et al, 2018a;Ibarra et al, 2018b;Jaimez et al, 2015;José et al, 2017;Mendoza et al, 2019;Mendoza et al, 2015;Rueda et al, 2016;Rueda et al, 2018;Sánchez et al, 2018;Valdes and Pérez, 2019;Villanueva et al, 2019. The current PTA challenges suggest that the subject matter of the study and generation of knowledge integrate experiences of stakeholders in a transdisciplinary research process (CP, 2017). Nevertheless, the results show scientific contributions oriented to increasing productivity, in congruency with the development of scientific research in the last 60 years that fosters a highly productive and profitable agriculture, although with environmental and social consequences (Sarandón, 2019).…”
