Chemical Composition of the Essential Oil of the Endemic Species Micromeria frivaldszkyana (Degen) Velen.

Abstract: Micromeria frivaldszkyana is an endemic species found only in Bulgaria. Its essential oil (EO) composition is unknown. This study assessed the EO yield and composition of M. frivaldszkyana as a function of the location and of drying prior to the EO extraction. M. frivaldszkyana was sampled from two natural habitats, Uzana and Shipka in the Balkan Mountains; the EO was extracted via hydrodistillation and analyzed on GC/MS. The plants from the two locations had distinct EO composition. The EO content (in dried m… Show more

“…The EO extraction was conducted via hydro-distillation of hemp air-dried material using 4-L hydro-distillation Clevenger-type units as described previously for another plant material [ 38 ]. The sample size was up to 50 g dry weight (DW) biomass in 1.2 L water.…”

“…Hemp volatile compounds were analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS as described previously [ 38 ], with the following modifications: the column temperature was initially set at 40 °C, then increased to 300 °C at a rate of 5 °C/min, which was held for 10 min. The flow rate of the carrier gas (He) was maintained at 1.0 mL/min.…”

“…Studies on the chemical composition of the Bulgarian-endemic plant M. frivaldszkyana are very scarce. However, there are a few studies on related species from the same family [ 21 ], as well as on the essential oil of the plant [ 22 ]. To our knowledge, we report for the first time the content and composition of sugars and organic acids from M. frivaldszkyana aerial parts.…”

“…The most abundant compounds in the EO of C. frivaldszkyanum, C. pulegium , C. serpyllifolium , and C. thymifolium were pulegone and piperitenone oxide, making oils of these species extremely rich in oxygenated monoterpenes (53–85.31%) ( Tables S7 and S8 ). According to Zheljazkov [ 58 ], pulegone was one of the main constituents in the EO of C. frivaldszkyanum from the Bulgarian populations of Shipka and Uzana.…”
