Chemical Composition of Sediments

Abstract: Most of the samples obtained during Leg 35 were noncalcareous because this part of the Southeast Pacific Basin lies in a zone where production of biogenic carbonate is sharply curtailed, and the carbonate compensation depth (CCD) lies considerably shallower than the water depth of the sites. However, the Paleocene sediments of Site 323 contained interbedded layers of coccolith-rich sediment composed of 28%-29% CaCOs. Typi-'Translated from Russian.
