The essential oil (EO) of the herbal pair (HP), Alpinia officinarum‐Cyperus rotundus (HP G‐X) has been conventionally used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for ‘warming the stomach’ and relieving pain. However, its pharmacologically active compounds, as well as the mechanism of its anti‐gastric ulcer properties remain unclear. In this study, the EOs obtained from HP G‐X and its corresponding single herbs were analyzed using GC/MS. A total of 74, 56, and 85 compounds were detected in A. officinarum (GLJ), C. rotundus (XF), and HP G‐X, accounting for 93.2 %, 89.5 %, and 92.0 % of the total content, respectively. GLJ mainly contains 1,8‐cineol (22.0 %) and α‐terpineol (11.8 %), whereas cyperenone (22.4 %) and cyperene (12.3 %) were the major constituents in XF. These four compounds were also detected in the HP G‐X with relatively high composition as 11.8 %, 5.5 %, 11.8 %, and 10.6 %, respectively. Although no new compounds were detected in HP G‐X, the relative concentration of some compounds increased, while others decreased or even disappeared. HP G‐X showed the lowest toxicity (TC50 >800 μg/mL) against human gastric mucosal epithelial cells (GES‐1) and had the best protective effect against ethanol‐induced GES‐1 cell damage compared to the individual herbs. In vitro studies demonstrated that HP G‐X and the corresponding single herbs significantly reduced IL‐6, TNF‐α, and COX‐2. In addition, in vivo investigations indicated that HP G‐X can protect the gastric mucosa of mice from ethanol‐induced damage by inhibiting the inflammatory reaction and providing analgesia. It can also inhibit the expression of NF‐κBp65, COX‐2, and TRPV1 protein, reduce the concentrations of IL‐6 and TNF‐α, and relieve heat‐induced pain. This study further substantiated the traditional application of HP G‐X against gastric ulcers through both in vivo and in vitro investigations.

Several plant essential oils have been used against diverse insect pests since, unlike conventional pesticides, they pose almost no risk to humans and the environment. For this reason, the essential oil (EO) isolated from the fresh leaves of Crithmum maritimum L. and its fractions (F1–F5) obtained by chromatographic simplification were investigated for their chemical profile, as well as for their toxicity and repellency effects against Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) adults. The analysis by GC/MS allowed the identification of 92.8–99.1 % of the compositions of the total oil (EO) and of its fractions (F1–F5). The EO and its fractions F3–F5 were characterized by the presence of a high amount of phenylpropanoids (94.4, 94.8, 93.6, and 88.7 %, respectively): in all the samples, dill apiole was the most abundant component (EO: 94.1 %, F3: 94.6 %, F4: 93.4 %, and F5: 83.3 %). In addition, the repellency assay results showed that the volatile fraction F5 and the complete EO exhibited a higher repellency towards T. castaneum (97 % and 93 %, respectively) after 2 h of exposure at the dose of 0.04 μL/cm2. The median lethal dose of the topical application of the EO was 9 %. Furthermore, the fraction F1 possessed interesting contact toxicity against T. castaneum (80 % of mortality) at the concentration of 10 %. These results suggested that the essential oil of C. maritimum leaves might be used as an alternative to synthetic insecticides in order to prevent insects from damaging the stored products.

GC-MS Analysis of Essential Oil Composition and Insecticidal Activity of Syzygium aromaticum against Callosobruchus Maculatus of Chickpea

The beetle Callosobruchus maculatus (Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae) is a destructive pest of stored chickpea seeds. The use of plant materials rather than conventional pesticides to control these pests is a promising alternative to chemical insecticides. The present study evaluated the insecticidal activity of clove essential oils by three different methods on Callosobruchus maculatus. The oils were obtained by hydro-distillation with a yield of 6.3 ± 0.23% and analyzed by GC-MS. In total, 65 compounds representing 99.92% of the oil were identified and the main components 80.26% Eugenol, 9.62% Eugenyl acetate, 6.74% β-Caryophyllene and 1.14% C-Humulene. The results of the insecticidal activity of S. aromaticum on C. maculatus performed by inhalation shows that a significant mortality was observed at a concentration of 20 μl/l against insects exposed at 24 hours (6.67%), 48 hours (36.67%) and 72 hours (100%).Contact test results are lower than those produced by inhalation. Essential oil decreased oviposition and fully suppressed adult growth at the highest dose of 20 μl/l of air per contact and inhalation test. The results of the present research have shown that EO had a high effectiveness against Callosobruchus maculatus, and in another hand these results can be used as a source of natural product to avoid the contamination of chickpea seeds, and also as an alternative to chemical products.
