Chemical composition and biological activities of the essential oil from Pulicaria undulata (L.) C. A. Mey. growing wild in Egypt

Abstract: Pulicaria undulata is used as antiinflammatory plant in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. We used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for analysis of essential oil of this plant growing wild in Egypt and 64 compounds were identified. The oil was rich in oxygenated monoterpenes (64.0%) and aromatic derivatives (18.8%). The major components were carvacrol (46.5%), xanthoxylin (18.1%) and carvotanacetone (8.7%). The oil of the Egyptian plant showed significant differences from the oil results reported on this spec… Show more

“…The yield obtained in the current study is different compared to those obtained by Chaib et al who found 0.50 % (w/w) (Chaib et al 2017). Our results are in agreement with other studies carried out on the same species, which reported that the genus Pulicaria yields relatively moderate quantities of essential oil (Shahat et al 2017, Mustafa et al 2018). Our results are in agreement with other studies carried out on the same species, which reported that the genus Pulicaria yields relatively moderate quantities of essential oil (Shahat et al 2017, Mustafa et al 2018 The chemical composition of P. incisa EO showed the presence of a total of 22 compounds (Table 01). The major components characterized were β-gurjunene (13.1%), β-bourbonene (11.5%), camphor (8.8%), γmuurolene (7.9%), 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol) (6.1%), ledol (4.9%), α-terpineol (4.2%) and other compounds at low percentages.…”

“…The use of multiple radical generating systems provides a better insight into the measure of antioxidant potential power, and DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assay were used to evaluate the scavenging activity and ferric-reducing ability of different A. subhirsutum extracts. All assays were conducted in a 96-well microplate assay following previously-described protocols [ 56 ]. For all analyses, a standard curve was prepared using different concentrations of Trolox, and all determinations were performed in triplicate.…”
