Abstract:Water is one of the most important of all natural resources known on the earth. The safety of drinking water is important for the health. The safety of drinking water is affected by various contaminants which included chemical and microbiological. Such contaminants cause serious health problems. The physico-chemical analyses of drinking water quality at Jigjiga city, Somali Region, Ethiopia were studied. Temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids, Total hardness have been determined along various water quality profiles. The experimental procedures were set according to the international drinking water standards set by WHO (1999). Average temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solids and total hardness values are 13.6 o C, 7.4, 1.143 S/m, 571.67 mg/l and 362.67 mg/l in CaCO 3 respectively. The result shows that, except the total hardness and electrical conductivity all the parameters fulfill the minimum and maximum permissible limit for drinking water guidelines.

Chemical speciation was carried out on trace and rare earth elements on trace and rare earth elements data on water samples in Oban Massif and Mamfe Mbayment southeastern Nigeria. Product moment correlation showed significant correlation at r>0.7 between REEs Pr and Nd, Pr and Lu, Sm and Nd, Sm and Pr, Tb and Nd, Tm and Tb, and Yb and Nd. Speciation modeling result showed that free metal ionic species dominated boreholes and spring water samples. The predominant trace metal complex is the OH-ligand. Trace elements mineral saturation indexes in boreholes at oversaturation (S>1) predicted more mineral species than equilibrium saturation (S=0). Rare earth elements mineral oversaturation (S>1) in boreholes predicted least mineral species. Undersaturation (S<1) predicted highest range of rare earth elements minerals. Springs and streams at S>1, predicted more mineral range than equilibrium (S=O) while mineral prediction at S<1 were the highest. Rare earth elements are precipitated at undersaturated condition in the study area.

Background and Objective: Drinking water distributed to a community must be free from pathogens and elevated levels of harmful substances at all times. So, monitoring the quality of drinking water before distributing it to the community is important. The study aimed to quantify the levels of selected drinking water parameters at the sources and Household tapes in Yabelo Town, Borena Zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia. Materials and Methods: For this study, a total of twelve water samples were collected from two water sources and two household tapes. The concentration of heavy metals in the water samples was determined using a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer and single beam UV-visible spectrophotometer. The AD8000 pH/mV/EC/TDS Meter was used to measure temperature, pH, EC (electrical conductivity) and TDS (total dissolved solids). Results: The study showed the levels of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Electrical Conductivity (EC), pH chloride and copper, except the levels of total hardness and manganese, were found to be lower than the Ethiopian Standard for Drinking Water Specification for all water samples. However, drinking water source 2 showed elevated levels of total alkalinity, calcium, magnesium and iron that exceed the maximum permissible limit set by the Ethiopian Standards Agency (ESA) and World Health Organization (WHO). Conclusion: In general, the result suggested that the drinking water provided to the Yabelo Town Community is potable and safe for consumption and doesn't pose a health risk despite elevated levels of some physicochemical quality parameters that caused aesthetic problems.
