“…Comparison of PM 2.5 Na ϩ and Cl Ϫ concentrations (see Figure 6) reveals that the observed Cl Ϫ /Na ϩ equivalent ratio (average ϳ0.33) is much lower than expected for sea salt (ϳ1.16). 20 The combination of apparent Cl Ϫ loss from sea salt and the observation that PM 2.5 NO 3 Ϫ concentrations peak during periods with transport from the Gulf region, suggests that HNO 3 reaction with sea salt is important. Indeed, if we examine the daily ratios of the sum of PM 2.5 NO 3 Ϫ and Cl Ϫ to PM 2.5 Na ϩ , it is found that on many days they fall close to the ratio expected in aged sea salt (see Figure 6).…”
