Chemical and biological studies of Ribes nigrum L. buds essential oil

Abstract: Ribes nigrum buds are used in medicine for the diuretic and antiseptic properties of their volatile compounds. We present in this paper comparative data concerning the chemical composition of Ribes nigrum buds essential oils obtained from three blackcurrant varieties. Essential oils were isolated by steam distillation and were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The Ribes nigrum essential oils (extracted from all three varieties) exhibited similar and large antibacterial spectrum, ac… Show more

“…A decrease in blood glucose level was also observed in Group Cii (Diabetic treated with 80 mg/kg body weight of aqueous leaf extract of V. amygdalina) when compared with Groups Aii and Aiii on days (7, 14 and 21) ( Table 2). Tannin has been reported to inhibit alpha-amylase, sucrose, as well as the action of SGLUT-1 of the intestinal brush border (Tiwari and Rao, 2002) and some other enzymes (Zheng et al, 2009;Oprea et al, 2008).…”

“…Tabart et al have reported that buds possess higher antioxidant ability than do other black currant parts. The essential oils of buds have been reported to possess significant antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria . Hence, the buds could be a natural alternative for the treatment of infectious diseases.…”

“…EOs are mixtures of molecules such as terpenoids, phenol-derived aromatic components and aliphatic components. Their quality, quantity and composition can vary depending on plant species, subsp., growth conditions (seasonal variation, climate, phenophase at the moment of harvesting), plant organ, age and oil extraction method [ 235 ].…”
