This study aims to find antioxidant peptides from octopus protein hydrolyzates and verify the protective effects against H2O2‐induced oxidative stress in IEC‐6 cells. After the alcalase hydrolysate was ultrafiltrated, purified by Sephadex G‐25 gel fractionation and semipreparative reversed‐phase high‐performance liquid chromatography (RP‐HPLC), 16 peptides were identified, and chemically synthesized. In particular, the peptides AQNY, AMMLAW, FEGAW, GGAW, VDTVVCVW, and VVCLW showed better oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and ABTS radical scavenging capacity. Among them, the smallest‐molecular‐weight peptide GGAW exhibited the best antioxidant activity. Furthermore, GGAW protected IEC‐6 cells from H2O2‐induced oxidative damage by significantly reducing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and increasing the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐PX), thereby improving cell viability. These results indicated that the peptide GGAW possessed the antioxidant capacity to prevent oxidative stress damage.

Animal-derived biomaterials have been extensively employed in clinical practice owing to their compositional and structural similarities with those of human tissues and organs, exhibiting good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, and extensive sources. However, there is an associated risk of infection with pathogenic microorganisms after the implantation of tissues from pigs, cattle, and other mammals in humans. Therefore, researchers have begun to explore the development of non-mammalian regenerative biomaterials. Among these is the swim bladder, a fish-derived biomaterial that is rapidly used in various fields of biomedicine because of its high collagen, elastin, and polysaccharide content. However, relevant reviews on the biomedical applications of swim bladders as effective biomaterials are lacking. Therefore, based on our previous research and in-depth understanding of this field, this review describes the structures and compositions, properties, and modifications of the swim bladder, with their direct (including soft tissue repair, dural repair, cardiovascular repair, and edible and pharmaceutical fish maw) and indirect applications (including extracted collagen peptides with smaller molecular weights, and collagen or gelatin with higher molecular weights used for hydrogels, and biological adhesives or glues) in the field of biomedicine in recent years. This review provides insights into the use of swim bladders as source of biomaterial; hence, it can aid biomedicine scholars by providing directions for advancements in this field.

Bioactive peptides (BPs) are fragments of 2–15 amino acid residues with biological properties. Dietary BPs derived from milk, egg, fish, soybean, corn, rice, quinoa, wheat, oat, potato, common bean, spirulina, and mussel are reported to possess beneficial effects on redox balance and metabolic disorders (obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD)). Peptide length, sequence, and composition significantly affected the bioactive properties of dietary BPs. Numerous studies have demonstrated that various dietary protein-derived BPs exhibited biological activities through the modulation of various molecular mechanisms and signaling pathways, including Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2/antioxidant response element in oxidative stress; peroxisome proliferator-activated-γ, CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein-α, and sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 in obesity; insulin receptor substrate-1/phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B and AMP-activated protein kinase in diabetes; angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition in hypertension; and mitogen-activated protein kinase and nuclear factor-kappa B in IBD. This review focuses on the action of molecular mechanisms of dietary BPs and provides novel insights in the maintenance of redox balance and metabolic diseases of human.
