Checklist of benthic macroinvertebrates of high altitude ponds of the Tatra Mountains (Central Europe) with new records of two species for Slovakia

Abstract: A checklist of benthic macroinvertebrates of ponds of Tatra Mountains is presented. The checklist comprises 122 taxa including the first records of Derotanypus cf. sibiricus (Kruglova & Chernovskii, 1940) (Diptera: Chironomidae) and Arctocorisa carinata (Sahlberg, 1918) (Heteroptera) from Slovakia. The most diverse pond site supported 28 taxa, the minimum number of recorded taxa was 2. The richest group was Chironomidae (Diptera) constituting almost half of the total diversity (58 taxa), followed by Tricho… Show more

“…Five other species (Arctocorisa carinata, Sigara distincta, Anisops sardeus, Notonecta lutea and N. maculata) were recorded for the first time during our study. While the records of A. sardeus and A. carinata were properly published (Reduciendo Klemenová & Svitok 2014, Novikmec et al 2015, the remaining three species were mentioned only in a conference abstract (Klementová et al 2012) and thus their exact records are provided here. Hesperocorixa parallela was recorded from Slovakia by Soós (1959), but that record was overlooked by all subsequent authors (cf.…”

“…Comparing the results with other European systems, the Lago Pratignano was found to be extremely rich in the number of taxa (Boix et al 2001;Sahuquillo et al 2007;Oertli et al 2008;Céréghino et al 2012;Guareschi et al 2012;Novikmec et al 2015); at the same time, comparisons of the results with high-altitude habitats in the Alps (Boggero et al 2005;Boggero and Lencioni 2006;Steingruber et al 2013) and in the central part of the Apennines, where Solimini et al (2008) found 61 taxa in a total of 31 ponds, highlight the richness of Lago Pratignano. These results confirm that the northern Apennines could represent an important area for further in-depth investigations of the macroinvertebrate communities of ponds.…”

“…Some information on the macrozoobethic community of small water bodies is present for Europe (Boix et al 2001;Sahuquillo et al 2007;Oertli et al 2008;Céréghino et al 2012;Guareschi et al 2012;Novikmec et al 2015). In Italy, there are data for alpine mountains ponds (Boggero et al 2005;Boggero and Lencioni 2006;Füreder et al 2006;Maiolini et al 2006;Steingruber et al 2013) and for lowland ponds Della Bella et al 2005;Della Bella and Mancini 2009).…”
