Chaya (Jatropha tanjorensis) leafs protect against sodium benzoate mediated renal dysfunction and hepatic damage in rats

Abstract: Background: Jatropha tanjorensis is a commonly consumed green leafy plant that has found usage in folk medicine. Sodium benzoate (C 6 H 5 COONa) is a widely used preservative in food/drink industries with potential cytotoxicity. Protective effect of some leafy plants on xenobiotic-induced toxicity have been established. Hence, this study sought to investigate the protective effect of methanolic leaf extract of Jatropha tanjorensis on sodium benzoate mediated renal and hepatic dysfunction in rats. Results: Sodi… Show more

“…Numerous plants that grow in Nigeria are well-known to have countless therapeutic potentials that could be due to their antioxidant properties ( Oladele et al., 2020b , c ). Plants are known to be the main source of natural antioxidants in the form of phenolic compounds (phenolic acids, flavonoids and polyphenols) ( Table 3 ).…”

“…Plants are known to be the main source of natural antioxidants in the form of phenolic compounds (phenolic acids, flavonoids and polyphenols) ( Table 3 ). Most of the anti-inflammatory, digestive, neuroprotective, hepatoprotective and nephroprotective drugs derived from natural origin have been reported to have antioxidant/radical scavenging mechanism as part of their activity ( Oladele et al., 2020b , c ; Oyewole et al., 2017 ). The ingestion of natural antioxidants has been associated with the reduced risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other diseases associated with ageing ( Ajayi et al., 2017 ).…”

“…Therefore, the discovery of novel, noninvasive, and nontoxic drug candidates that will effectively mitigate mucosal inflammation is required. Medicinal plants are used since time immemorial in the treatment of various diseases due to their accessibility, inexpensive natural products, and host a broad range of both biologically and chemically active phytocompounds which have been used in the synthesis of therapeutic drugs (Oladele et al., 2017a, 2017d; Oladele, Ajayi, Oyeleke, Oladele, Olowookere, Adeniyi, & Oyewole, 2020; Oladele, Oladele, et al., 2020; Oladele, Oyeleke, Oladele, et al., 2020; Oyewole et al., 2016, 2017). Telfairia occidentalis is a medicinal plant with a number of claimed pharmacological activities (Oladele et al., 2017b, 2017c; Oladele, Oyeleke, Awosanya, et al., 2020; Oladele, Bamigboye, et al., 2020).…”
