Charcoal injection in blast furnaces (Bio-PCI): CO2 reduction potential and economic prospects

Abstract: Pulverized coal injection (PCI)Sustainable ironmaking a b s t r a c tThe steel industry is under pressure to reduce its CO 2 emissions, which arise from the use of coal. In the long-term, the injection of pulverized particles of charcoal from biomass through blast furnace tuyeres, in this case called Bio-PCI, is an attractive method from both an environmental and metallurgical viewpoint. The potential of Bio-PCI has been assessed in terms of its CO 2 abatement potential and economic viewpoint. A cost objective… Show more

“…The idea is to replace pulverized coal (an auxiliary fuel), which is injected in large amounts in Swedish blast furnaces. The needed biomass is found in ample amounts in Sweden and available knowledge suggests that operating conditions will not be fundamentally affected [2][3][4][5][6].…”

“…Over the years, injection of pulverized coal (PC) has been introduced worldwide in the majority of all blast furnaces [2]-foremost as a cost saving measure. A previous study by some of the authors; Orre et al [12], investigates the economic impact of introducing a range of injectants, where injections clearly lower the production cost versus an all-coke operating mode.…”

“…The European Union (EU) has set a target to cut 80% of the CO 2 of fossil carbon, by 2050 [3]. In several studies the possible decrease in fossil CO 2 emissions by using biomass is reported [4][5][6].…”

“…A substituição parcial do carvão por um combustível renovável como a biomassa é atrativa no setor siderúrgico, uma vez que a neutralidade da biomassa em relação as emissões de CO2 pode contribuir com a redução dessas emissões nas usinas [1]. O processo de injeção via ventaneiras dos altos-fornos (Pulverized Coal Injection -PCI) é bem estabelecido e flexível à incorporação de biomassa pulverizada em misturas com carvões.…”
