Traffic patterns generated by multimedia services are different from traditional Poisson traffic. It has been shown in numerous studies that multimedia network traffic exhibits self-similarity and burstiness over a large range of time-scales. The area of wireless IP traffic modeling for the purpose of providing assured QoS to the end-user is still immature and the majority of existing work is based on characterization of wireless IP traffic without any coupling of the behaviour of queueing systems under such traffic conditions. Work in this area has either been limited to simplified models of FIFO queueing systems which do not accurately reflect likely queueing system implementations or the results have been limited to simplified numerical analysis studies. In this paper, we advance the knowledge of queueing systems by example of traffic engineering of different UMTS service classes. Specifically, we examine QoS mapping using three common queueing disciplines; Priority Queuing (PQ), Low Latency Queuing (LLQ) and Custom Queueing (CQ), which are likely to be used in future all-IP based packet transport networks. The present study is based on a long-range dependent traffic model, which is second order self-similar. We consider three different classes of M. Iftikhar ( ) self-similar traffic fed into a G/M/1 queueing system and construct analytical models on the basis of non-preemptive priority, low-latency queueing and custom queueing respectively. In each case, expressions are derived for the expected waiting times and packet loss rates of different traffic classes. We have developed a comprehensive discrete-event simulator for a G/M/1 queueing system in order to understand and evaluate the QoS behaviour of self-similar traffic and carried out performance evaluations of multiple classes of input traffic in terms of expected queue length, packet delay and packet loss rate. Furthermore, we have developed a traffic generator based on the self-similar traffic model and fed the generated traffic through a CISCO router-based test bed. The results obtained from the three different queueing schemes (PQ, CQ and LLQ) are then compared with the simulation results in order to validate our analytical models.

With the 802.11 WLAN multimedia applications (Video, Audio, real-time voice over IP,…) increasing, providing Quality of Service (QoS) support becomes very important since the original standard doesn't take QoS into account. The standard offers access to the wireless users only regarding physical considerations. This can lead to overloaded access points (AP) and considerable degradation of the QoS. This paper deals with this problem. It focuses on the presentation of a QoS management solution for wireless communication systems. It mainly defends that a balanced distribution of mobile stations among the available access points leads to better performances of the Wireless LAN. Some OPNET simulations of the proposed approach are presented to show a better resources allocation and efficiency on QoS metrics. A protocol structure between mobiles and APs is also specified for the implementation of this approach. An SDL description and MSC simulation of this protocol is provided as a first step in its development.

The prevalence of the IEEE 802.11b technology has made Wi-Fi based Audio/Video (AV) conferencing applications a viable service. However, due to the "best-effort" transport service and other unpredictable factors such as user mobility, location and background traffic, the transport channel behavior often fluctuates drastically. It thus becomes rather difficult to configure an appropriate de-jitter buffer to maintain the temporal fidelity of the AV presentation. We propose in this paper an adaptive delay and synchronization control scheme for AV conferencing applications over campus-wide WLANs. Making use of a distributed timing mechanism, the scheme monitors the synchronization errors and estimates the delay jitters among adjacent Media Data Units (MDUs) in real-time. It piece-wisely controls the equalization delay to compensate for the delay jitters experienced by MDUs in a closed-loop manner. We investigate the performance of the proposed scheme through trace-driven simulations. We collected network traces from a production campus-wide IEEE 802.11b WLAN by emulating real conferencing sessions. Simulation results show that the scheme is capable of dynamically balancing between synchronization requirements and latency requirements in all scenarios. Small synchronization phase distortions, low MDU loss percentages and low average end-to-end delay can be achieved simultaneously. In particular, compared with solutions using a static setting, the proposed scheme is able to achieve a reduction of around 100ms in end-to-end delay with the same amount of MDU losses under some media-unfriendly situations.
