Characterization of the rescued “Voghera” sweet pepper landrace grown in northern Italy

Abstract: A traditional Italian sweet pepper landrace, 'Peperone di Voghera', which faced the risk of extinction, was analyzed for its genetic, phenological, morphological, agronomic and biochemical traits. An extant population was compared with cultivars 'Quadrato d'Asti', 'Cuneo', and 'Giallo d'Asti', cultivated in the same area, in order to evaluate the chance of the landrace recovery. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis demonstrated that Voghera landrace is distinct with respect to reference culti… Show more

“…Anyhow, the groups detected well represent the variability, which is the result of the selection process carried out by farmers, and confirm their key role in the recovery and rescue of the traditional genetic resources. The presence of such defined internal variability, as well the rescue of ancient landraces, is a starting point for genetic improvement and selection of new cultivars (Cavagna et al , 2012). Particularly, landraces could represent a valuable source of complex traits, especially those underlying flavour and taste.…”

“…The European consumption is mostly represented by sweet types derived from the Mediterranean area. In such locations, a combination of favourable soil and climatic conditions allows for the development of a large number of adapted landraces carrying peculiar characteristics that are highly appreciated by consumers (Portis et al , 2006; Cavagna et al , 2012). The sweet pepper ‘Friariello’ ( C. annuum L.), developed in the Campania region, is one of the most common Italian ecotypes.…”

“…In recent years, the Lombardy Region and the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry have set up projects and established legislation aimed at safeguarding local and national agrobiodiversity, which is of fundamental importance for the Italian economy, given the wealth of varieties, breeds, and typical local products that exist throughout the country and the traditions linked to them (Barcaccia et al 2002;Cavagna et provides support for efforts to conserve agrobiodiversity and establishes a registry of Italian agricultural food products such as the Copafam bean.…”

“…Such an interest actively stimulates the study, rescue and valorization of landraces (e.g. Janick et al 2007;Cavagna et al 2012). Moreover the political entities implemented their legislation to assure the conservation of landraces threatened by genetic erosion, especially in the most developed countries (e.g.…”
