Bacteria are critical components of lake ecosystems, and understanding the characteristics of bacterial community structure and diversity indices is of significant importance for the analysis and management of lake ecology. In this study, overlying water samples were collected from Yangzong Lake in May, June, and July 2021. High-throughput sequencing and statistical analysis were employed to investigate the relationships between physicochemical factors, bacterial community structure, and diversity in the overlying water of Yangzong Lake. The results showed significant differences in oxidation-reduction potential among the sampling points. The order of oxidation-reduction potential was as follows: Yangzong DAHE > Yangzong Lake South > Yangzong Lake Middle > Yangzong Lake North, while other physicochemical factors exhibited minor differences. The number of OTUs and bacterial alpha diversity index in the overlying water of Yangzong Lake Middle were higher than those in Yangzong Lake North, Yangzong Lake South, and Yangzong DAHE. The dominant bacterial phyla in the overlying water were Actinobacteriota, Bacteroidota, and Proteobacteria. Actinobacteriota had the highest relative abundance of 34.63% in Yangzong Lake North, while Bacteroidota had the highest relative abundance of 33.79% in Yangzong Lake South, and Proteobacteria had the highest relative abundance of 27.29% in Yangzong Lake Middle. The dominant genera were hgcI_clade, CL500-29_marine_group, and Flavobacterium. Among them, hgcI_clade had the highest relative abundance of 37.56% in Yangzong Lake North, CL500-29_marine_group had the highest relative abundance of 35.22% in Yangzong Lake South, and Flavobacterium had the highest relative abundance of 42.02% in Yangzong Lake Middle. Correlation analysis revealed significant correlations between Campilobacterota at the phylum level and dissolved oxygen (DO) and total phosphorus (TP). At the genus level, Flavobacterium, Limnohabitans, and Pseudarcicella showed significant correlations with DO and TP.

The discharge of industrial effluent constituting high orthophosphates and organic pollutants in water receiving bodies compromises freshwater quality and perpetuates eutrophication. In this study, an anaerobic–aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) under activated sludge was investigated for orthophosphates and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal from brewery wastewater. Raw brewery wastewater samples were collected on a daily basis for a period of 4 weeks. The findings of the study are reported based on overall removal efficiencies recording 69% for orthophosphates and 54% for total COD for a sludge retention time (SRT) of 7 days and hydraulic retention time of 18 h at mesophilic temperature conditions of ±25 °C. Moreover, the SBR system showed stability on orthophosphate removal at a SRT ranging from 3 to 7 days with a variation in organic volumetric loading rate ranging from 1.14 to 4.83 kg COD/m3.day. The anaerobic reaction period was experimentally found to be 4 h with the aerobic phase lasting for 14 h. The SBR system demonstrated feasibility on orthophosphates and COD removal with variation in organic loading rate.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have garnered significant attention due to their capacity to generate electricity using renewable and carbon-neutral energy sources such as wastewater. Extensive experimental work and modeling techniques have been employed to dissect these processes and understand their respective impacts on electricity generation. The driving force is to enhance MFC performance for practical applications commercially. Among the various statistical modeling approaches, one particularly robust tool is the Design of Experiments (DoE). It serves to establish the relationships between different variables that influence MFC performance and allows for the optimization of the MFC configuration and operation for scaled-up performances in terms of bioelectricity generation. This study focused on optimizing microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for bioelectricity production using industrial wastewater treatment, employing the Box–Behnken design (BBD) methodology. Through an analysis of response surface models and ANOVA tests, it was found that a combined approach of reduced quadratic, reduced two-factor interaction, and linear models yielded sound results, particularly in voltage yield, COD removal, and current density. Second-order regression models predicted optimal conditions for various parameters, with surface area, temperature, and catholyte dosage identified as critical input variables for optimization. Under these conditions, conducted by the four-factor and three-level Box–Behnken design methodology in a double-chamber MFC unit considering eight output variables—CCV yield, % COD removal, current density, power density, % TSS removal, % CE, and % PO43−—the optimum values were 700 mV, 54.4%, 54.4 mA/m2, 73.7 mW/m2, 99%, 21.2%, and 100%, respectively. At optimum operating conditions, the results revealed a desirability of 76.6% out of a total of 92 iterations. The paper highlights the effectiveness of statistical ANOVA fit-statistics modeling and optimization in enhancing DCMFC performance, recommending its use as a sustainable bioenergy source. Furthermore, validation results supported the above optimization output response findings and confirmed the viability of biorefinery wastewater as an anolyte for scaling up DCMFC bioelectricity generation.
