Characterization of Seeds, Seedlings and Initial Growth of Jacaranda Mimosifolia D. Don. (Bignoniaceae)

Abstract: This research aimed to characterize the biometry of seeds, the morphology of seedlings and to evaluate the initial growth of blue jacaranda trees (Jacaranda mimosifolia D. Don.) in two environments with distinct luminosity. The biometry of 100 de-winged seeds was measured by their length, width and thickness. One hundred seeds were sown into 300 cm3 tubes and seedlings morphology was registered throughout the germination process using digital photographs disposed sequentially according to seedlings age. The in… Show more

“…Morong) [78]. As an ornamental plant, J. mimosifolia has been introduced and cultivated in nearly 100 countries and regions in Asia, North America and Oceania [41]. According to the geographical distribution data (Figure 2), the cultivated area of J. mimosifolia in China is concentrated in the subtropical region (25 • ± 5 • N), extending from the coastal areas of the eastern and southern parts to the southwest inland where the hydrothermal conditions are plentiful.…”

“…Accompanied by graceful bipinnate compound leaves and elegant tree form, it has been widely cultivated in the warmer parts of the world [37]. At present, the research on jacaranda has mainly concentrated on its use as a garden ornamental [38], cultivation [39], propagation [40][41][42], environmental tolerance [43], phytochemistry [44], medicinal use [45,46], ecological function [47] and environmental monitoring applications [47,48].…”

“…These particularities that each species reveals are study tools under controlled conditions in which the optimization of cultivation is sought, as well as the best growth and accumulation of phytomass of Salvia officinalis cultivated in red and blue meshes with 50% shading was observed (8) . Through growth analysis, it is possible to understand how plants respond to abiotic factors such as the selection of the light spectrum and how they are involved in the physiological aspects of the growth process (9) .…”
