Characterization of Red Raspberry Cultivars and Selections Using Isoenzyme Analysis

Abstract: Isoenzyme staining of horizontal starch gels was used to characterize 23 cultivars and three advanced selections of red raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.). The genotypes were separable using the enzymes malate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucoisomerase, phosphoglucomutase, and triose phosphate isomerase. In addition, staining for isocitrate dehydrogenase and shikimate dehydrogenase revealed polymorphisms in some cultivars. By combining these results with those obtained for 78 previously t… Show more

“…Isozyme analysis has likewise only been moderately successful in distinguishing cultivars (Cousineau & Donnelly, 1989) . However, a set of ten Rubus cultivars could be uniquely characterized by applying DNA minisatellite analysis (Nybom et al ., 1989) .…”

“…Isoenzyme variability was used in genetic analysis of diploid Rubus species (Cousineau and Donnelly 1992) and was widely used for identifying raspberry varieties (Cousineau et al 1993;Pandolfi et al 1993). Electrophoresis of soluble proteins was used for distinguishing raspberry and blackberry hybrids (Lopez-Medina et al 1996).…”
