Characterization of postural control impairment in women with fibromyalgia

Abstract: The main goal of this cross-sectional study was to detect whether women with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) have altered postural control and to study the sensory contribution to postural control. We also explored the possibility that self-induced anxiety and lower limb strength may be related to postural control. For this purpose, 129 women within an age range of 40 to 70 years were enrolled. Eighty of the enrolled women had FMS. Postural control variables, such as Ellipse, Root mean square (RMS) and Sample entr… Show more

“…Two studies reported significant influence of adding a dual-task, showing a decrease in physical and cognitive performance. [14,15] Sempere-Rubio et al [15] showed that postural control worse during dual-task condition. Interestingly de Gier et al [14] stated that baseline pain may determine the physical performance the patient will do.…”

“…Fibromyalgia (FM) is a common chronic pain condition that has a significant impact on quality of life (QoL) [1], possibly due to its interference with physical ability, function, work, and social activities [2]. Previous studies revealed that the global physical condition (PC) in FM patients is impaired, since, compared to healthy counterparts, strength is reduced [3], postural control is altered [4,5], body posture is misaligned [6], or functional capacity is poor [1]. Furthermore, another important factor closely related to PC is flexibility, which is known to influence postural maintenance [7] and was independently associated with pain in this population [8], which was also associated with postural maintenance [6].…”

“…The different task combinations are motor-motor, cognitive-cognitive, and motor-cognitive. Previous studies have analyzed the influence of adding a cognitive task when performing physical fitness tests in women with FM [27][28][29], but none of them have reported test-retest reliability. A test is considered reliable when, on two or more occasions under the same conditions, a subject obtains similar results [30].…”
