Strength Assessment Under Dual Task Conditions in Women with Fibromyalgia: A Test–Retest Reliability Study

Abstract: The present study aimed to: (1) analyze the test–retest reliability of the 30 s chair stand test and the 30 s arm curl test under dual-task conditions; (2) analyze the test–retest reliability of a new variable which assesses the total performance (cognitive + physical) in both tests. A total of 37 women with fibromyalgia participated in the study. Participants completed the 30 s arm curl test and 30 s chair stand test in both simple and dual-task conditions. These tests were repeated after seven days. In the 3… Show more

“…In the ACT test, the patients, seated on a chair with backrest and holding a dumbbell (2.3 kg) with the elbow extended, had to flex and extend the elbow as many times as possible in 30 s [ 40 ]. Both tests have shown excellent reliability in FM patients (6MWT ICC: 0.91–0.98; ACT ICC: 0.81–0.86) [ 41 , 42 ].…”

“…During the DT conditions, participants simultaneously performed the concentric/concentric test described above and, at the same time, a cognitive task. Specifically, the cognitive task required participants to subtract numbers two by two from a value greater than 100, which was chosen at random, being odd or even [ 30 ].…”

“…Several studies have already focused on assessing the reliability of various tests and measures under DT conditions [ 30 , 31 , 32 ]. This is crucial, since evaluating these activities taking into account not only physical demands but also cognitive factors such as attention and executive functions makes them more representative of real-life demands [ 20 , 21 , 33 ].…”

“…In DT conditions, participants will simultaneously perform the corresponding physical task (strength or balance) and a cognitive task. In this regard, the cognitive task will consist of two-by-two subtractions from a number greater than 100 [ 74 ].…”
