Characterization of Multidrug Resistance Patterns of Emerging Salmonella enterica Serovar Rissen along the Food Chain in China

Abstract: Salmonella spp. are recognized as important foodborne pathogens globally. Salmonella enterica serovar Rissen is one of the important Salmonella serovars linked with swine products in numerous countries and can transmit to humans by food chain contamination. Worldwide emerging S. Rissen is considered as one of the most common pathogens to cause human salmonellosis. The objective of this study was to determine the antimicrobial resistance properties and patterns of Salmonella Rissen isolates obtained from humans… Show more

“…Interestingly, these two plasmids were reported to be the predominant types in the MDR and hypervirulent isolates (Chen et al, 2016 ; Elbediwi et al, 2019 , 2020a ). IncHI2, IncHI2A, and IncF plasmids are often linked with persistence, as well as harboring virulence and antimicrobial resistance genes, which play a vital role in contributing to bacterial fitness (Ibarra and Steele-Mortimer, 2009 ; Villa et al, 2010 ; Coelho et al, 2012 ; Chen et al, 2016 ; Biswas et al, 2020 ; Xu et al, 2020a ).…”

“…Except for S. Typhimurium causing disease or no symptoms, S. Rissen displayed a similar characteristic to S. Typhimurium in human infection (Table 2 ). In 2009, S. Rissen caused > 80 people infection in over 4 different states of the USA, and the cases for human infection by S. Rissen were also reported in Denmark, Thailand, UK, and China [ 22 – 24 ]. Among 208 S. Rissen isolates from human samples, 108 out of the isolates were from patients, 100 isolates were from the asymptomatic carriers [ 22 ], reflecting that nearly 50% of the people infected with S. Rissen were in the asymptomatic state as well as in our study (Table 2 ).…”

Paratyphi A (100%) obtained from blood samples, and nontyphoidal S. Enteritidis (77.8%) collected from diarrheagenic patients.…”

“…Salmonella is one of the most common causes of human diarrheal diseases resulting in a significant morbidity and mortality burden over the world ( Centers for Disease Control Prevention, 2013 ; Crump et al, 2015 ; Xu X. et al, 2020 ). It is also being considered as the leading cause of childhood diarrheal diseases in developing countries ( Ince et al, 2012 ; Bula-Rudas et al, 2015 ) especially in China.…”
