Characterization of muco- and bioadhesive properties of chitosan, PVP, and chitosan/PVP blends and release of amoxicillin from alginate beads coated with chitosan/PVP

Abstract: From the controlled drug release and muco/bioadhesive properties of these coated AMX-alginate beads, we suggest that the alginate-coated beads might be a promising drug delivery system to assist with the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infections.

“…This approach has often been proposed as a valuable alternative to chemical manipulation. As an example, blending of PVP and chitosan in the 1:1 ratio allowed a significant improve of the work of adhesion of the single material [58]. The addition of HPMC to PMM permitted to reduce the erosion rate of PMM and the swelling properties of HPMC without a significant modification of mucoadhesive properties [59].…”

“…Viscosity measurements were performed to determine the mucoadhesion as previously described 30 , 35 . Theoretically, interactions between polymers (CS, ro PVP, and CS/ ro PVP hydrogels) and mucin resulted in viscosity changes; these changes can be converted into mechanical energy or work.…”

“…Further, Suknuntha et al . reported that the mucoadhesion of CS could also be enhanced by blending it with PVP 30 . PVP was demonstrated to control the porous nature of the CS-PVP blend as well, and it exhibited controlled drug release from freeze-dried matrices, making CS-PVP freeze-dried matrices a potential candidate for the controlled release of antibiotics in the stomach’s acidic environment 31 .…”
