Characterization of Lancefield group C Streptococcus dysgalactiae isolated from farmed fish

Abstract: A Lancefield group C streptococcal (GCS) infection caused by Streptococcus dysgalactiae that is characterized by severe necrotic lesions of the caudal peduncle has been an increasing cause of mortality in farmed fish such as amberjack, Seriola dumerili, and yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata, in the southern part of Kyushu, Japan. In this study, enzymatic profiles of GCS strains from fish and mammals were investigated using the API ZYM system, and genotypic characterization of GCS strains was performed using b… Show more

“…According to enzymatic profiles, these strains were recommended as the subspecies S. dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis although it needed more proofs (Nomoto et al, 2006;Kawata et al, 2003). Three-fifth and four-fifth healthy sturgeons died after being challenged with the dosage of 4 × 10 8 CFU of sturgeon's isolates and LD50 value of one representative isolate for crucian carps was 2.45 × 10 8 -5.54 × 10 8 CFU even after passage through them three times.…”

“…This division is based on phenotypic and genetic differences in hemolysis, whole-cell protein profiles [6], multilocus enzyme electrophoresis typing, and DNA-DNA relatedness [7]. However, biased sinusoidal field gel electrophoresis (BSFGE) and sodA sequence analysis revealed that S. dysgalactiae isolates obtained from farmed fish differed from those obtained from mammals [8,9].…”

“…dysgalactiae is an important pathogenic bacterium which is reason of acute or chronic mastitisthe for cattle, goats and sheep (Chenier et al, 2008) even for fish (Nomoto et al, 2006). S. pluranimalium was isolated from panda 3 when it was Alvei profluvium.…”
