Characterization of ionic composition of TSP and PM10 during the Middle Eastern Dust (MED) storms in Ahvaz, Iran

Abstract: Because of the recent frequent observations of major dust storms in southwestern cities in Iran such as Ahvaz, and the importance of the ionic composition of particulate matters regarding their health effects, source apportionment, etc., the present work was conducted aiming at characterizing the ionic composition of total suspended particles (TSP) and particles on the order of ∼10 μm or less (PM(10)) during dust storms in Ahvaz in April-September 2010. TSP and PM(10) samples were collected and their ionic com… Show more

“…According to the National Standards of PRC (GB 3095-2012), an annual average value is valid if there are at least 60 samples of daily average values that had equally distributed, and the same, a monthly average value is valid if there are at least 5 samples of daily average values that had equally distributed. Shahsavani et al (2012). The detection limit was 10 ng/ml with the error less than 5%, and 1 ml RbBr of 200 ppm was put in the solution as internal standard before sampling.…”

“…Dust storms carry a lot of various materials. Annually, dust storms transport particulate matter approximately 800 trillion grams to Asia (2). The frequent occurrence of dust storms due to drought in the Middle East is causing environmental and health problems (3,4).…”

“…Then, 20 ml of the anionic or the cationic sample was injected into the IC device for each measure. The sodium hydrogen carbonate (1.5 mM), combined with sodium carbonate (1.6 mM) and nitric acid (3.2 mM), was used as solvents for anionic and cationic samples, respectively (Shahsavani et al, 2012b).…”

“…Moreover, research done in 2014 showed 116 days in terms of pollutant PM 2.5 as unfavorable condition (Shahsavani et al, 2012a). Although some researchers have done research on the physicochemical characterization of airborne particles in Tehran (Hassanvand et al, 2015;Shahsavani et al, 2012b), there has been no research on the potential genotoxicity of PM 2.5 ambient in the Tehran air on human lung epithelial cells (A549). Hence, it is necessary for us to study it.…”
