Characterization of Inkjet-Printed Digital Microfluidics Devices

Abstract: Digital microfluidics (DMF) devices enable precise manipulation of small liquid volumes in point-of-care testing. A printed circuit board (PCB) substrate is commonly utilized to build DMF devices. However, inkjet printing can be used to fabricate DMF circuits, providing a less expensive alternative to PCB-based DMF designs while enabling more rapid design iteration cycles. We demonstrate the cleanroom-free fabrication process of a low-cost inkjet-printed DMF circuit. We compare Kapton and polymethyl methacryla… Show more

“…The device can process a unit droplet volume of 1.20 μL. Inkjet printing can be utilised to build digital microfluidic (DMF) circuits, making them less expensive than PCB-based designs and allowing for faster design iteration cycles 78 has demonstrated the fabrication of an inexpensive inkjet-printed digital microfluidic circuit without using a cleanroom. Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is the final product for many of chemical reactions and hence detection of H 2 O 2 becomes necessary in bioanalytical chemistry.…”

“…The glass/silicon-based digital microfluidics have high electrode patterns precision but are costly on materials and processing instruments. On the other hand, various low-cost approaches for digital microfluidics have also been invented, as follows: electrodes were fabricated on PCB (printed circuit board) [15]; screenprinting was used for the fabrication of carbon electrodes on thin polymer films or paper as substrate [16]; xurography or even hand-painting were also used for the low-cost digital microfluidic approach [17].…”

“…The use of microfluidics in engineering, chemistry, and biology, including thermocapillary-based sensors and devices, has increased in recent years and has been summarized by Karbalaei et al [ 1 ]. A review of digital microfluidic devices was presented by Shiyu Chen et al [ 2 ]. Jasińska and Malecha described the proposed microfluidic modules with integrated microwave components [ 3 ].…”
