Characterization of fowl adenoviruses associated with hydropericardium syndrome and inclusion body hepatitis in broiler chickens

Abstract: The present study was carried out for detection and molecular characterization of fowl adenoviruses (FAdVs) associated with hydropericardium syndrome or inclusion body hepatitis in commercial broiler chickens. The FAdVs were detected in liver samples from 33 commercial broiler chicken flocks by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using hexon gene specific primers. The restriction enzyme analysis using StyI, BsiWI, MluI, AspI, BglI and ScaI enzymes of all the 33 FAdV-positive samples revealed FAdV-4 in 10 samples, … Show more

“…Recently, IBH and HPS cases have been reported and confirmed in Asia and Europe (Asthana, Chandra, & Kumar, ; Choi et al., ; Mittal, Jindal, Tiwari, & Khokhar, ; Ojkic et al., ; Shahzad et al., ), and FAdV strains have been isolated and serologically typed. The genome sequences of these viruses have also been analysed phylogenetically (Kaján, Kecskeméti, Harrach, & BenkÅ, ; Tae‐Hyun et al., ; Toro & Hess, ).…”

“…However, since July 2015, outbreaks of HPS occurred with sudden high mortality rates in broilers in many small and middle chicken forms in central China, even the duck farms, leading to tremendous economic losses. Recent years, the frequency of HPS have also been increasing in many countries, such as India (2014) [18], Canada (2011) [19], Hungary (2013) [20], Korea (2012) [21], Japan (2012) [22], and Poland (2016) [10]. The ON1 and JSJ13 strains in local regions in China didn’t lead to severe clinical symptoms.…”

“…A neighbour joining tree (Figure 1 identity for the four strains that aligned with FAdV-11. and high rates of mortality in the absence of co-infecting viruses (Gomis et al, 2006;Mittal et al, 2014). Virulent strains belonging mainly to serotypes FAdV-8a, FAdV-8b and FAdV-11 were implicated in causing severe outbreaks of IBH in several countries including Canada and Australia (Dar et al, 2012;Gomis et al, 2006;Steer et al, 2015;Steer-Cope, 2015).…”
