Characterization of dissolved organic matter in Dongjianghu Lake by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy with multivariate analysis

Abstract: UV-visible absorption spectroscopy coupled with principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was applied to characterize spectroscopic components, detect latent factors, and investigate spatial variations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in a large-scale lake. Twelve surface water samples were collected from Dongjianghu Lake in China. DOM contained lignin and quinine moieties, carboxylic acid, microbial products, and aromatic and alkyl groups, which in the northern part of the la… Show more

“…Fig. 1 Watersheds of the Xihe River and location of the sampling sites PCA were carried on the data matrices of the heavy metals to trace the potential factors and reveal the patterns of the sediment samples [34,35]. The score plots for heavy metals can characterize the potential factors of each principal components (PC), and the loading plots for the 10 sediment layers can be used to investigate the sedimentary characteristics of the heavy metals.…”

“…Variations in heavy metal values were presented using sediment depth and sampling site matrices. CCA and PCA were carried on the data matrices of the heavy metals to trace the potential factors and reveal the patterns of the sediment samples [28,29]. The score plots for heavy metals can characterize the potential factors of each principal components (PC) , and the loading plots for the 10 sediment layers can be used to investigate the sedimentary characteristics of the heavy metals.…”

“…Moreover, the American Public Health Association (APHA) 4500-Nor was used to determine the concentrations of phosphates [21], while the lab pH-meter Frederick, MD, US was used for pH measurements. The color was determined using the UV-V Spectrophotometer (PE-5400UV) pr-in ECOCHEMICAL, St. Petersburg, Russia [22]. Concentration levels of TSS were determined using the Hach TSS portable hand-held turbidity meter (HACH/LANGE, Berlin, Germany).…”
