Characterization of Brazilian soybean cultivars using microsatellite markers

Abstract: Microsatellite markers or SSR (Simple Sequence Repeats) have proved to be an excellent tool for cultivar identification, pedigree analysis and the evaluation of genetic distance among organisms. Soybean cultivars have been characterized mainly by morphological and biochemical traits. However, these traits have not been sufficient to characterize the large number of cultivars eligible to receive protection under the Brazilian Cultivar Protection Act. In order to define new soybean cultivar markers, the alleles … Show more

“…High levels of polymorphism were revealed in soybean by the use of neutral SSR markers, for both the number of alleles per locus and gene diversity (Akkaya et al, 1992;Narvel et al, 2000;Priolli et al, 2002;Priolli et al, 2010). In this study, using SSR markers and considering the parameters of BNF and protein content, we have also observed high variability amongst both modern germoplasms cultivated in Brazil and ancestral lines.…”

“…Thus, microsatellite loci are often multi-allelic (Saghai-Maroof et al, 1994). In addition to high levels of polymorphism, SSR sequences possess most of the desirable attributes of molecular markers, including information content, unambiguous designation of alleles, neutral selectively (although they can be subjected to hitch-hiking effects), high reproducibility, codominance, and fast and easy assaying of genotypes and therefore microsatellite markers or SSR have proved to be very useful for cultivar identification, pedigree analysis and the evaluation of genetic distance between organisms (Priolli et al, 2002) and genetic mapping (Yu et al, 2000).…”
