To compare the inorganic chemical compositions of TSP (total suspended particulate), PM 10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 10 μm) and PM 2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm) in southern and northern cities in China, atmospheric particles were synchronously collected in Dalian (the northern city) and Xiamen (the southern city) in spring and autumn of 2004. The mass concentrations, twenty-three elements and nine soluble ions were assessed. The results show that in Dalian, the mass concentrations of Mg, Al, Ca, Mn and Fe in spring were 4.0-10.1, 2.6-8.0, 4.1-12, 1.2-3.6 and 2.9-7.9 times higher, respectively, than those in Xiamen. The dust storm influence is more obvious in Dalian in spring. However, in Xiamen, heavy metals accounted for 13.9%-17.9% of TSP, while heavy metals contributed to 5.5%-9.3% of TSP in Dalian.These concentrations suggest that heavy metal pollution in Xiamen was more serious. Atmospheric particulate matter samples (PM 2.5 and PM 10 ) were collected at urban sites (São Paulo, SPA; Piracicaba, PRB) in São Paulo State, Brazil. In order to characterize the chemical composition of particulate matter, several chemical components were analyzed from the samples, and among these were inorganic and organic anions, monosaccharide anhydrides, and organic and elemental carbon. Long-range transport of the particulate matter while sugar cane was being burned contributed to an increase in PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations at the SPA site. Sulphate, nitrate, ammonium, elemental carbon and particulate organic material (POM) were major components of the total PM 2.5 and PM 2.5-10 . The contribution of POM to PM 2.5 at PRB was 29%, similar to the results found for the winter season at the SPA site.The Cl -/Na + ratio at the SPA site for PM 2.5 was different from that at the other site, with chloride depletion indicating several sources beyond sea salt. The occurrence of levoglucosan and its correlations with potassium confirm the contribution of local biomass burning (at PRB) and long-range transported particles at SPA. OC/EC ratios and the correlation coefficients indicated secondary formation of OC at both sites.

This study introduces the Southern Particulate Matter Supersite in Taiwan, which began operating on April 1, 2005. The supersite has one core station and three satellite stations for monitoring the properties of particulate matter (PM) and emission sources in southern Taiwan. High-time resolution(1-30 minutes) data for physical and chemical properties of ambient PM are acquired continuously.Measurement data are as follows: (1) PM 2.5 (PM with aerodynamic diameters < 2.5 μm) and PM 10 (PM with aerodynamic diameters < 10 μm) mass concentrations; (2) PM 2.5 compositions of sulfate, nitrate and carbon; (3) particle light scattering and absorption; (4) particle number concentrations in various size fractions between 10 nm and 20 μm; (5) related precursor gases such as NO y , H 2 O 2 , and NH 3 ; and, (6) meteorological variables. Most measurements are unique to the study area and can be used to elucidate the causes of PM pollution and evaluate PM exposure and adverse health effects. In addition to describing the sampling location, measurements and data archiving, future challenges for the supersite are discussed as well.
