Characterization of Antiplatelet Properties of Silver Nanoparticles

Abstract: Thrombotic disorders have emerged as serious threat to society. As anticoagulant and thrombolytic therapies are usually associated with serious bleeding complications, the focus has now shifted to regulating and maintaining platelets in an inactive state. In the present study we show that nanosilver has an innate antiplatelet property and effectively prevents integrin-mediated platelet responses, both in vivo and in vitro, in a concentration-dependent manner. Ultrastructural studies show that nanosilver accumu… Show more

“…where x 1 , x 2 and x 3 are input variables; B 0 is a constant; B 1 and B 2 are linear coefficients; B 12 is the interaction coefficient, B 11 and B 22 are quadratic coefficients and ε is experimental error. In this study, 2 3 full factorial CCD for three independent variables each at five levels with six axial points (with an axial distance of ± 1.68 for making this design orthogonal) and six replicate at the center points was employed to fit a second order polynomial model which indicated that 20 experiments were required for this procedure ( Table 2).…”

“…Among the metal nanoparticles, silver (Ag) nanoparticles have attracted considerable attention due to their wide applicability [2][3][4][5]. In addition to their antibacterial activity which has been known since ancient times [6], various attributes of Ag nanoparticles have been determined such as antifungal activity [7], antiinflammatory effects [8] antiviral activity [9] antiangiogenesis activity [10] and antiplatelet activity [11]. There is a variety of chemical and physical techniques to prepare metal nanoparticles, such as chemical reduction [12,13], electrochemical reduction [14,15], photochemical reduction [16,17] and heat evaporation [18,19].…”

“…According to Shrivastava et al (2009) silver nanoparticles are effective in treatment of thrombotic disorders by causing inhibition of platelet functional responses like aggregation, secretion, adhesion etc. A similar study exhibited anti-platelet properties of silver nanoparticles wherein significant inhibition of platelet functions was observed via, in vivo mouse models.…”
