Characterization of a Picornavirus Isolated from Broiler Chicks

Abstract: The rectal content of an apparently normal 1-week-old broiler chick yielded an unclassified cytopathogenic virus with cytopathic effects of the round type. It was identified as a picornavirus from the following: ribonucleic acid in the viral core; virus growth in the cytoplasm; a particle about 30 nm in diameter; resistance to ethyl ether, chloroform, trypsin, and acid; relative heat-lability; and partial stabilization to molar magnesium chloride. The virus was stable under freezing and thawing, and sonication… Show more

“…Avian Nephritis Virus (ANV) is an enteric virus, which primarily infects chickens, but has also been detected in turkeys and pigeons (Yamaguchi et al, 1979;Connor et al, 1987;Zhao et al, 2011). Its initial discovery was made in 1976 in Japan and it has subsequently been detected in other countries including in Australia in 2008 (Yamaguchi et al, 1979;Hewson et al, 2010).…”

“…Its initial discovery was made in 1976 in Japan and it has subsequently been detected in other countries including in Australia in 2008 (Yamaguchi et al, 1979;Hewson et al, 2010). Experimental infection studies have suggested that the virus can cause poor growth, kidney lesions and increased mortality in young chickens (Frazier et al, 1990).…”

“…To date, two different astrovirus species have been identified in chickens. Avian nephritis virus (ANV-1) was originally isolated from a 1-week-old healthy broiler chick by Yamaguchi et al (1979) and has now been classified as an astrovirus after complete sequencing of the viral genome (Imada et al, 2000). This virus causes mild growth depression, interstitial nephritis and sometimes even mortality, especially after infection of 1-day-old specific pathogen free (SPF) chickens.…”

“…The isolation of enteroviruses and enterovirus-like viruses from chickens has been reported previously (Butterfield et al, 1969;Yamaguchi et al, 1979;McNulty et al" , 1987Spackman et al, 1984;Decaesstecker et al, 1986;Takase et al, 1989;Shirai et al, 1992). Several of these viruses have been compared by cross-indirect immunofluorescence and cross-serum neutralization tests and 5 serogroups identified (Takase et al, 1989;McNulty et al, 1990;Shirai étal, 1991Shirai étal, , 1992.…”

“…These include avian nephritis virus (ANV) which was first isolated from the rectal contents of a clinically normal broiler chicken in Japan (Yamaguchi et al, 1979), two enterovirus-like viruses (ELV-1, ELV-2) isolated from the faeces of broiler chickens , a virus (BELV-1) isolated from broiler chickens with runting stunting syndrome in Belgium (Decaesstecker et al, 1986) and FP3 virus, isolated from the meconium of dead-in-shell chicken embryos in England (Spackman et al } 1984).…”
