Indonesia has an abundant amount of basalt rocks resources, including in East Lampung Regency of Lampung Province. This basalt has not been used optimally and only be used as a foundation. The use of basalt as soil fertilizer also known as the stone meal. This study focused on the effect of using basalt dust on the growth and development of organic fertilizer application for the cassava plant. This study is to support the local government policies that declared Lampung as a national development centre of cassava, with a production rate of 30.8% of the national production of cassava. Basalt powder was characterized using test petrograph and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) for a description of microscopic and chemical composition. The test results were used to determine the chemical composition of rock classification using the TAS diagram. The experiments of applying fertilizer on cassava crops in the demonstration plots 8 treatment x 3 repetitions were conducted by adding the percentage by weight of the basalt towards organic fertilizer between 0% (control 1), 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and without treatment (control 2). The results indicated that basalt from East Lampung is classified as olivine Tholeite basalt which is rich in CaO, Mg and Na2O + K2O. The growth rate of cassava plants which are affected by basalt powder presentation is characterized by a value which is higher than the value of CGR control, and recommended to not exceed 10% of the weight of basalt fertilizer.

Basalt merupakan batuan dengan potensi sebagai material maju yang belum termanfaatkan secara maksimal di Indonesia. Basalt memiliki sifat fisis dan mekanik seperti ketahanan terhadap korosi sehingga sangat cocok dijadikan sebagai material pelapis pada logam. Pada penelitian ini melakukan eksperimen pelapisan baja ASTM -A36 menggunakan serbuk basalt dengan metode hot dipping.Desain eksperimen menggunakan methode taguchi 3^3 dengan jumlah sampel 9. Variasi eksperimen yang digunakan yaitu ukuran partikel basalt, temperatur proses pelapisan, dan lama pencelupan. Pengujian laju korosi menggunakan larutan HCl (2M) dan NaCl (2M). Optimasi parameter proses pelapisan dengan laju korosi terkecil diperoleh dengan ukuran serbuk 400 mesh, temperatur pencelupan 100 o C, waktu celup 10 menit untuk pengujian dengan larutan HCl, dan ukuran partikel 400 mesh, temperatur pencelupan 150 o C, waktu pencelupan 10 menit untuk pengujian dengan larutan NaCL. Ukuran partikel basalt telah menunjukkan pengaruh yang sangat signifikan dengan nilai kontribusi sebesar 73,16% pada pengujian dengan larutan HCl dan 89,47% pada pengujian dengan larutan NaCl. Semakin kecil ukuran partikel basalt akan berakibat pada ikatan antar partikel menjadi semakin baik dan lapisan yang dihasilkan semakin padat sehingga menghasilkan nilai tahan korosi yang semakin baik pula. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa serbuk basalt dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan pelapis.

The insecticidal effect of natural basalt powder on Tribolium castaneum was evaluated. Two tests were used to study the insecticidal action of the basalt powder on the stored durum wheat. The coating test followed by the Bioassay test. The coating test of Tribolium castaneum adults in 10g of natural basalt powder, for 17 samples at rate of 25 adults per sample and an uncoated control, showed an insecticidal effect of the said powder with mortality rate of 100% for 70 hours of exposure against 5% for the control sample with a homogeneity of the mortality rate for the 17 samples. The bioassay test was carried out on durum wheat, the natural basalt powder was applied as dust at six different doses. The results of showed an insecticidal efficacy closely related to the dose and the time of exposure. The 500ppm dose showed insecticidal potential after 12 days of exposure against Tribolium castaneum (100% mortality). However, the 300ppm dose showed significant efficacy (100% mortality) against Tribolium castaneum after 14 days of exposure. In addition, the doses over than or equal to 75ppm resulted in a significant reduction in the insect population (mortality more than 74% for 14 days of exposure) compared to the control, providing new approach of integrated pest management strategy.
