Characterization and Electrochemical Behaviour of Nanoscale Hydrotalcite-Like Compounds toward the Reduction of Nitrate

Abstract: In this research, nano Cu/Al–HTLCs, Co/Al–HTLCs and Cu/Co/Al–HTLCs were synthesized, characterized, and tested in electrolytic reduction nitrate. Experimental results showed that Cu/Al–HTLCs were less stable than Co/Al–HTLCs due to the Jahn–Teller effect. However, electrocatalytic activity of copper was superior to that of cobalt; thus, Cu/Co/Al–HTLCs were selected based on their stable crystalline structure and electrochemical activity. The optimized Cu2CoAl–HTLC was highly active in nitrate reduction, with t… Show more

“…To date, few LDHs have been used as active materials in electrochemical NitRR, in each case both a high voltage and high nitrate concentration were needed to achieve a high FE which decreases the overall energy efficiency ( i.e. [NO 3 − ] = 14 mM [NO 3 − ] for Co 1 Fe–CO 3 LDH; 43 [NO 3 − ] = 25 mM for Cu 2 CoAl–CO 3 LDH; 52 [NO 3 − ] = 100 mM for Co 3 AlCO 3 LDH 53 ). In this work, we have explored a range of designer LDH decorated Cu foam electrodes (LDH/Cu foam) in order to investigate the role of mixed transition metal combinations to generate hydrogen radicals.…”

“…25 Instead of electro-oxidation, nano hydrocalcites (LDHs) of Cu/Al, Co/Al, and Cu/Co/Al were tested in the electrolytic reduction of nitrate, where the optimized Cu 2 CoAl-LDH was found to be highly active in nitrate reduction. 26 In the electrocatalytic process, LDHs based on the transition metal ion, mainly cobalt and nickel ions, were utilized as heterogeneous electrocatalysts for oxidation in a liquid medium. However, none of the LDHs were applied to gas-phase electrocatalysts at the solid-gas interface.…”
