Characterization and correction of spherical aberration due to glass substrate in the design and fabrication of Fresnel zone lenses

Abstract: As with a conventional lens, a Fresnel zone lens (FZL) can be used to image objects at infinity or nearby. In the latter case, the FZL converts a diverging spherical wavefront into a converging spherical wavefront. The glass substrate on which the FZL is fabricated introduces spherical aberration resulting in a shift of the image plane and blurring of the image. Two novel schemes for correction of this spherical aberration are proposed and studied in this paper. To demonstrate them, FZLs are designed with and … Show more

“…The first Fresnel zone lens (FZL 1 ) is designed for infinite conjugate mode with a focal length f =z 1 , which is the distance between the object plane and the RMBDL and so the incident object wave is collimated by FZL 1 . The second Fresnel zone lens (FZL 2 ) is designed for finite conjugate mode with u = z 1 and v = z 2 /2 22 . The object wave is focused by FZL 2 at z 2 /2 from the RMBDL.…”

“…The second Fresnel zone lens (FZL2) is designed for finite conjugate mode with u = z1 and v = z2/2. 19 The object wave is focused by FZL2 at z2/2 from the RMBDL. The hologram is recorded approximately at z2 from the RMBDL, where the two beams have roughly the same diameter and are perfectly overlapped.…”

“…Lensless imaging systems can offer aberration free imaging and, in particular, to solve problems associated with the manufacturing of objective lenses for telescopes and microscopes. 21,22 This technique can be a benefit for telescopic and microscopy systems for visible as well as non-visible wavelengths for which fabrication of lenses and creating interference are challenging tasks. Lensless and interferenceless imaging systems have been already proposed by Chi et.al.…”
