The aim of this study was to comprehensively review our experience with odontogenic infections in the head and neck region requiring treatment at a national referral center. We retrospectively reviewed 85 patients treated at the Chair and Clinic of Maxillofacial Surgery of the University Hospital in Wrocław between January 2018 and June 2019. We excluded patients with nonondontogenic infections or other than purulent clinical forms of dentivitis in the head and neck region. Several demographic, clinicopathological, and treatment variables were assessed. The majority of patients were men who were referred for inpatient treatment by a dentist or family doctor, presented to the Hospital Emergency Ward (SOR) by themselves, or transported to the SOR by paramedics SOR from their home or another hospital. All patients were treated in accordance with the current guidelines for head and neck region odontogenic infections. An incision was made and the abscess was drained. The odontogenic cause was removed followed by the collection of tissue for microbiological examination. The course of infection was monitored by means of laboratory parameters such as leukocyte counts and c-reactive protein levels. Odontogenic infections in the head and neck region are a persistent and common problem. Rapid, accurate diagnosis and treatment minimizes the risk of life-threatening complications, shortens the hospitalization period, and lowers treatment costs.

Background:Indwelling Double-J ureteral stenting is commonly used in urological practice and has various complications. This study aimed to assess the frequency of bacterial stent colonization and stent-associated bacteriuria after indwelling it for different time durations and to evaluate the significance of urinary cultures for identification of colonizing microorganisms.Materials and Methods:A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted. Midstream urine from 72 patients undergoing J stent insertion was investigated microbiologically before stent insertion and on the day of stent removal. The stents were removed by aseptic manipulation, and 1–3 cm of the tip located in the bladder was collected for microbiological study. The urine and stent samples were cultured, and the bacterial pathogens were identified using standard microbiological methods followed by Phoenix automated system. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method.Results:Bacterial colonies were found in 47.2% (34 of 72) of the stents. Of the multiple pathogens identified, Escherichia coli (20%) was the most common, followed by Streptococcus sp. (17.5%) and Pseudomonas sp. (12.5%). The bacteria did not colonize within the first 2 weeks of stent placement. Results showed that 55% of the isolates were resistant to erythromycin, 52.5% to ampicillin, 42.5% to piperacillin, and least resistant being 17.5% for tetracycline and imipenem. However, 81.3% and 66.7% of the stents were colonized when placed for 90–120 days and 60–90 days, respectively.Conclusion:High prevalence of bacterial isolates and risk of bacteriuria and colonization was found in the DJ stent tips, with E. coli being dominant colonizer. Most of the bacteria were resistant to different classes of antibiotics. Bacteriuria and stent colonization gradually increases with the duration of stent retention in the body.

Recognition and acknowledgment of novel bacterial taxonomy and nomenclature revisions can impact clinical practice, disease epidemiology, and routine clinical microbiology laboratory operations. The Journal of Clinical Microbiology (JCM) herein presents its biannual report summarizing such changes published in the years 2016 and 2017, as published and added by the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology. Noteworthy discussion centers around descriptions of novel Corynebacteriaceae and an anaerobic mycolic acid-producing bacterium in the suborder Corynebacterineae; revisions within the Propionibacterium, Clostridium, Borrelia, and Enterobacter genera; and a major reorganization of the family Enterobacteriaceae. JCM intends to sustain this series of reports as advancements in molecular genetics, whole-genome sequencing, and studies of the human microbiome continue to produce novel taxa and clearer understandings of bacterial relatedness.
