Characteristics of the AlTiCrN+DLC coating deposited with a cathodic arc and the PACVD process

Abstract: A coating system composed of the AlTiCrN film covered with diamond-like carbon (DLC)-based lubricant, deposited on a hot-work tool-steel substrate was the subject of the research. The AlTiCrN and DLC layers were deposited with a cathodic arc and the PACVD technology on the X40CrMoV5-1. A HRTEM investigation showed an amorphous character of the DLC layer. It was found that the tested AlTiCrN layer has a columnar character with fine crystallites. Based on the XRD analysis, the fcc type of the crystal structure w… Show more

“…For example, an interesting and original technique of laser cladding under high frequency micro-vibration was developed and presented by Li et al [22]. Many researchers point to several advantages of laser cladding over other methods of coatings [23][24][25][26][27]. However, current trends to ensure the highest energy efficiency of machines and devices, including the durability and reliability of machine components and tools, force the search for new or improved materials, as well as for new methods of their manufacturing, to overcome the limitations of current technologies.…”

“…A drawback of DLC coatings is their inability to withstand high temperatures. Manufacturers of tools with these coatings warn against heating them to more than 450°C [13]. It is clear that cutting off the nickel alloys without coolant, even for interrupted cuts, will result in a situation where the area adjacent to the tool's cutting edge would heat to more higher temperature.…”

“…Various methods of surface heat treatment to improve the tribological properties of metals and alloys were investigated and are widely described in the literature [17][18][19][20][21]. The most interesting and most advanced are laser and plasma surface treatment, and ion implantation.…”
