In the last three decades, the constantly increasing need for therapies, efficiently preventing and/or treating human diseases, has raised the interest in Regenerative Medicine (RM). RM is based on employing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), that showed to have great proliferation, self-renewal and multilineage differentiation potential, in vitro as well as in vivo. The opportunity of an accessible, painless and low-cost reservoir of MSCs constitutes the first important step of a successful regenerative therapy to include in the current clinical practice. Oral cavity has recently demonstrated to contain different MSCs niches: dental pulp from permanent and deciduous teeth, periodontal ligament, dental follicle, apical papilla and mucosa. MSCs from dental pulp of deciduous teeth, naturally lost in pediatric age, and the oral mucosa have shown to be easily harvested and to have a promising regenerative potential. Thus, the aim of the paper is to review the potentialities of human exfoliated deciduous teeth stem cells (SHEDs) and oral mucosa stem cells (OMSCs) in RM, with the purpose of their use as accessible source of MSCs for the future of pediatric patient.

Adult stem cells research has been considered the most advanced sort of medical-scientific research, particularly stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED), which represent an immature stem cell population. The purpose of this review is to describe the current knowledge concerning SHED from full-text scientific publications from 2003 to 2015, available in English language and based on the keyword and/or abbreviations ‘stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED)', and individually presented as to the properties of SHED, immunomodulatory properties of SHED and stem cell banking. In summary, these cell populations are easily accessible by noninvasive procedures and can be isolated, cultured and expanded in vitro, successfully differentiated in vitro and in vivo into odontoblasts, osteoblasts, chondrocytes, adipocytes and neural cells, and present low immune reactions or rejection following SHED transplantation. Furthermore, SHED are able to remain undifferentiated and stable after long-term cryopreservation. In conclusion, the high proliferative capacity, easy access, multilineage differentiation capacity, noninvasiveness and few ethical concerns make stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth the most valuable source of stem cells for tissue engineering and cell-based regenerative medicine therapies.

The potency and quality of adult stem cells in our body is reversely proportional to our age.When stem cells were discovered in deciduous teeth, it has drawn much attention to the dental and medical fields. Because these cells are normally from children shedding teeth around ages 6-12, they are relatively more immature stem cells. The isolated stem cells from the pulp of deciduous teeth were named SHED (stem cells from exfoliated deciduous teeth) [1].
