Characteristics of Post Socialist Spatial Development of the Functional Urban Area of Veszprém, Hungary

Abstract: The post-socialist era resulted remarkable changes in urban landscape in Eastern Europe and in Hungary. The special circumstances caused moderate level of urbanisation and special patterns of urban sprawl, traceable in land use changes. The urban sprawl and suburbanisation became an important trend around smaller Hungarian cities as well. Regulators are eager to rule the evolution of spaces, however, it is hard to control all aspects of land use. The research presented in this paper shows the dynamics of new a… Show more

“…Subsidies from these funds from 2007 to 2013 were aimed at equalising economic and social conditions in all regions of the EU, including in cities. The impact of transformations in Central and Eastern European countries in the recent thirty years on LUCC was investigated under numerous projects, in particular in such countries as Poland [38][39][40], Czechia [8,9], Slovakia [41,42], and Hungary [39,40,43,44].…”

“…From the distribution of new artificial areas, the road network, especially the motorway and the primary roads, have the same role. Furthermore, a ring road can be the tool of control urban sprawl, as the example of Veszprém shows (Iváncsics and Filepné Kovács 2019).…”

“…In Central Europe, most of the studies focus on the capitals (Feranec et al, 2010;Nuissl and ESPON EU-LUPA, 2014;Siedentop, 2021); thus, in Hungary special attention is paid to the Budapest agglomeration (Tosics, 1998;Schuchmann, 2013;Egyedné Gergely, 2014;Cegielska et al, 2018;Kovács et al, 2019;Lennert et al, 2020). However, smaller towns are also affected by urban sprawl (Iváncsics and Filepné Kovács, 2019). An overview study was carried out on Hungarian second-tier towns (Iváncsics and Filepné Kovács, 2021), drawing lessons from former research and using the methodology to formulate the need for a deeper understanding of the changes, background processes, and a more precise overview of the individual cases.…”

“…Many researchers have employed Landsat images to investigate LULC changes in others cases and locations (for example, the studies of Bayramov, Buchroithner & Bayramov, 2016;Mtibaa & Irie, 2016;Hassen & Assen, 2018). Furthermore, other researchers have studied the relationship between LULC changes and the development of urban areas (Iváncsics & Kovács, 2019;O'Donoghue, 2019;Podawca, Karsznia & Zawrzykraj, 2019 two cities, namely Pasuruan and Probolinggo (Fig. 1) covering an area of 3320.3 km 2 .…”
