Characteristics of Patients With Chronic Hepatitis B Virus Infection With Genotype E Predominance in Burkina Faso

Abstract: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotype E (HBV-E) accounts for the majority of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) infections in West Africa. We aimed to determine factors associated with HBV-E-induced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in West Africa. Data on patients from Burkina Faso who were hepatitis B surface antigen positive (HBsAg+) and had CHB were analyzed. HBV viral load and hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) status were measured in 3,885 individuals with CHB without HCC (CHB HCC−) and 59 individuals with CHB with HCC (CHB H… Show more

“…Genotype C has been associated with a higher risk of HCC than other genotypes. [ 26 , 27 ] Other viral factors, host genetic differences, lifestyle factors, and access to diagnostics and treatment could add to differences in risk by origin. [ 28 ] Risk factors, like aflatoxins, have been mentioned in both sub‐Saharan Africa and Asia, and today, obesity and NAFLD are of increasing importance for liver disease.…”

“…The median age of HBV diagnosis in Burkina Faso is 32 years. 9 There is a widespread annual screening of HBV infection during events such as the world hepatitis day in Burkina Faso. In addition, individuals who were tested positive at a younger age would be excluded from a donation.…”
