Characteristics of Meiyu Seen From Multiple Observational Analyses and Reanalyses

Abstract: • Characteristics of Meiyu belt in East Asia were systematically examined using two analyses and four reanalysis datasets • A gradual northward movement of the Meiyu belt is observed with two large precipitation centers in southern Japan and in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River • It is recommended that TRMM and MERRA2 reanalysis be used for investigating the Meiyu precipitation system and its large-scale conditions Accepted Article This article has been accepted for publication and undergone full p… Show more

“…The main data in this study is the latest meteorological reanalysis data ERA5 of European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, including precipitation data, wind and geopotential data of multiple barometric layers, etc. The study of Tong [3] showed that ERA5 had similar climate mean, annual variance, and consistent interannual variation of precipitation to satellite data of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) in Meiyu. It also solved the problem of lack of observation data at sea in MYA.…”

“…In this study, we define the MYA as the region between 28 • N-36 • N and 110 • E-140 • E with heavy rainfall [3]. The monthly data of June, July, and August from 1991 to 2020 were used to analyze the intraseasonal variations of precipitation and circulation anomalies so that high-frequency oscillations could be removed as much as possible without losing the major characteristics of intraseasonal variations.…”

“…There are two prerequisites to forming condensate: one is high humidity, which provides a source of water, and the other is a large temperature difference. Both conditions can be met during the rainy season in southeastern China, since in the subtropical monsoon climate zone, the humid air will stop along the Yangtze River when warm air blowing from the south meets cold air from the north pole, resulting in high temperatures and humidity in the region [33,34]. During this period, condensate was easily formed in caves, tombs, and indoor spaces with rapid temperature changes.…”

“…Meiyu is the outcome of seasonal adjustment of atmospheric circulation in the East Asian monsoon region (Liang et al 2007;Zhou et al 2020;Tong et al 2021). With the onset of the South China Sea summer monsoon, and following the northward advance of the East Asian monsoon, the northwest Pacific subtropical high (hereinafter, SH) has three northward jumps (Su & Xue 2011;Ye et al 2014).…”
